TheAssassin’s Creedfranchise has long been one to tell stories of alternate history during eras throughout time. Whether that be the Third Crusade, the Italian Renaissance, or the Golden Age of Piracy, the series has thrust players through intricate real-life historical tales, with the added fictional elements of Assassins and Templars. However, the series recently took a rather drastic turn withAssassin’s Creed Originsby adding mythical elements to this historical take, andAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokmay follow suit.
It is not yet known whether or notRagnarokwill be more historical likeAssassin’s Creed 2or mythical likeOriginsor Odyssey. But because the series has now had multiple successful games in a row with the mythical elements tied to them, it seems likely that it will continue on with beasts and monsters.

It would be a bit of a surprise forAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokto turn away from what is working very well for the series right now, even as a recentleak point to it being closer toAssassin’s Creed: Rogue. But ifRagnarokis a continuation ofOriginsandOdyssey, with RPG mechanics and mythical beasts, it begs the question as to what types of mythology beasts would be roaming the Viking lands in the game.
It hasn’t been confirmed that the nextAssassin’s Creedgame will take place in the land of Vikings, but with all of the rumors, leaks, and high profile corroborations, it would be a shock ifRagnarokisn’t soaked in Norse history and culture. There are tons of Norse opportunities forRagnarokto explore, some that the developer may or may not take advantage of. When it comes to mythological beings, the culture believed in a remarkable amount of gods and goddesses, creatures such as elves and dwarves, and monstrous beings, so here are some that would be fun additions.
Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Kraken
Perhaps it is unfair to start with the most terrifying of sea beasts, but the Kraken was feared by so many because it was believed by so many. The sea is so alarmingly vast, so terrifying, that man looks at it and wonders what could be beneath the white caps on the blue water above. Many question ifRagnarokwill be likeBlack Flag, with all of the ocean travel and warfare, so the idea of the player needing to keep an eye out for Kraken underneath the sea would be horrifying. There were also moments of sea diving for buried treasure at sunken ships inBlack Flag, which certainly feels more piratey than Viking-like, but even that would be an impressive moment to come across Kraken. If a boss fight ended in killing Kraken itself, that could be a fight for the ages.
Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Jotunn
A Jotunn is like a giant troll in Norse mythology. However, upon a close examination of the translation, the “giant” Jutunn is about the same height as a human. So it really comes down to the girth of the being, as it is wide and heavy in stature. The Jotunn is a “devourer” that also travels in packs. For the sake ofAssasin’s Creed: Ragnarok, it would be possible that an event could start if players enter a section where a Jotunn is blocking off an area, and the player needs to take it down before they can progress. Jotunn was used inGod of War, a game that reviewed amazingly on the PS4.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Valkyries
As Odin’s female guardians, Valkyries are more than adept in battle. In Norse mythology, they choose who enters into Valhalla, and also who dies in battle. They are often seen as beautiful women flying on a flying horse, but their name means “Choosers of the Slain,” so looks can be deceiving.Odin and the gods will probably at least be referenced inRagnarok, meaning the Valkyrie’s inclusion could be as likely as well, but whether or not that means that the gods will be actually in the game and their helpers will be on the Assassin’s side or against them at any moment is something else entirely.
A Page from Skyrim: Draugr
The Draugr are basically zombies because every mythology needs an undead monster of some sort. Dragur are a bit different than the normal brain-eating, slow walking, drooling zombies, however. They can change their size, shapeshift into other creatures, have super-human strength, and swim through solid rock. And they often roam in packs, as they are found in graveyards (obviously). Draugr has been in a few video games before, includingSkyrim, but a fully fleshed out version of this monster with the Norse mythology in mind inRagnarokwould be fun. It might make this undead enter into thetop 5 zombies in video games.
Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Fenrir
Fenrir is a wolf monster, one of the most fierce of all Norse mythology beings, and one of Loki’s children. The wolf is so unbelievably strong that in one of the stories he kills Odin and devours the sun, during “Ragnarok” no less. Over time it seems as if his size has grown, as he may have been closer to the size of a regular wolf at one point, but his strength was always been undeniable. If Fenrir were to be in theAssasin’s Creed Ragnarok, it’s totally possible that the monster would be the hardest creature in the game.
A Page from God of War: Jormungandr
The absolutely gigantic snake is also known as the Midgard Serpent or Jormungandr, another one of Loki’s children. The serpent was thrown into the sea by Odin, but it grew so incredibly large that it can surround Midgard, and it constantly circles the earth.Jormungandr made an appearance in the most recentGod of Wartitle, another franchise that is currently taking interesting routes in the realm of Norse mythology. A bout with Jormungandr inRagnarokwould be interesting based solely on its size.
Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok: Huginn and Muninn
Huginn and Munnin mean “thought” and “mind.” The two ravens fly around and bring news of men to Odin. Taking an entirely different approach, it would be fascinating if these two creatures were companions inRagnarok, similar to Ikaros fromAssassin’s Creed Odyssey, one of the best animal companions in video games. If the two birds could fly out, point out the locations of enemies, important details, and more, it would be a very cool take on the Norse mythology element of the game.
There are so many gods, goddesses, creatures, and monsters in Norse mythology. The game may end up taking the route of the original titles and not have any mythical beings at all. Or, it could do a total 180 and even dwarves and elves could be roaming the Viking land (though that admittedly seems unlikely). Asmore leaks forRagnarokslip outnearly every day, it may not be long until fans find out concrete information soon, in the meantime, it’s fun to imagine a duel between an Assassin and a fierce wolf that was strong enough to take down even Odin himself.
