As part of the recent D23 Marvel and Disney Games Showcase presentation, in-game footage of MMORPGAvatar: Reckoningwas shown for the very first time. Announced earlier this year, there have been a lot of questions regarding whatAvatar: Reckoningis, outside of a mobile MMORPG based on James Cameron’s films. The new trailer offers a first look at what gameplay inAvatar: Reckoningmay look like, and some may be surprised.
An idea of whatAvatar: Reckoningcame from developer Archosaur Games' past work. The Chinese mobile game developer’s most recent release isNoah’s Heart, an open-world fantasy MMORPG. It features full character creation, a story campaign, and action gameplay.Avatar: Reckoningwill be trading the action combat for third-person shooting and there’s no indication it’s open-world, but it does show that Archosaur is a veteran team with mobile MMORPG experience.

The trailer forAvatar: Reckoningfeatures a mix of in-engine cinematics and gameplay. The story seems inspired by the firstAvatarmovie, which featured a human becoming an “operator” of a Na’vi-human hybrid avatar. As such, they’re visiting another planet, interacting with the Na’vi natives but still wielding human guns and wearing human clothing. Progression in the MMORPG will involve upgrading these guns and equipment, with the trailer hinting at aThe Division-esque arsenalfor players to wield.
Other MMORPG gameplay shown in the trailer includes a dungeon-like battle involving giant saws moving back and forth in an arena. A party of players has to destroy the saws while avoiding the damage, much like it’s a dungeon boss. There’s also a player vs. player mode shown featuring what looks like a team-based deathmatch mode. It looks likeAvatar: Reckoningwill attempt to appeal to competitive shooter players in addition toMMORPG fans.
No release window forAvatar: Reckoningis confirmed as part of the presentation, though the trailer narration does say it will be coming to mobile devices soon. That’s perhaps for the best, as the diverse range of content shown in the trailer raised as many questions as it answered. Justwhat kind of gameAvatar: Reckoningistrying to sell itself as isn’t entirely clear.
The secondAvatarfilm, titledAvatar: The Way of Water, is tentatively planned for release on December 16 later this year. It’s possibleAvatar: Reckoningis targeting a release alongside the launch ofAvatar 2in theaters. Considering the popularity of the firstAvatarfilm, that would certainly prove beneficial to the success of the game, so long as it can deliver a polished gaming experience.
