Awesome Games Done Quickis launching the first major speedrunning event of the year this weekend on behalf of the Prevent Cancer Foundation.Awesome Games Done Quick Onlinewill feature top speedrunners from around the world who will be showing off their techniques in both classic and modern games, ranging from old-school 8-bit platformers to more recent favorites.
Since 2010,Games Done Quick has raised millions of dollarsin support of various charities and humanitarian organizations with its speedrunning events. The organization hosts a variety of events each year, such as Games Done Quick Express at TwitchCon along with the Frame Fatales event featuring women and non-binary players. Games Done Quick has always focused on altruistic causes, supporting a number of charities such as Doctors Without Borders during Japan’s 2011 tsunami crisis and the Houston Food Bank when Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas in 2017. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Awesome Games Done Quick events have largely moved to online-only attendance.

The firstGames Done Quick event of 2023kicks off this weekend on January 8 with a pre-show beginning at 11:30 AM EST. The very first run of the marathon will be aSplatoon 3Any% run by LonTr0, and will feature back-to-back speedruns of countless games until concluding with aSuper Mario Bros. 3speed run by mitchflowerpower on January 14. Other games to be featured during the marathon includeThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,Resident Evil 7,andSuper Mario Galaxy 2.Even MMORPGs are being represented in the event, with Angelusdemonus soloingFinal Fantasy 14’s Palace of the Dead with both hands on the keyboard.
2023’s first event is arriving shortly afterGames Done Quick founder Mike Uyamaannounced that he’s leaving the organization to embark on his next adventure. The very first Games Done Quick event was held in Uyama’s mother’s basement, humbly earning $10,000 for CARE before growing into one of the most successful charitable organizations in gaming, while helping the speedrunning community grow to new heights.
Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 Online is being held in support of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and donations can be made directly to the charity during the event on Games Done Quick’s website. Last year’s event brought an impressive $3.4 million indonations to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, with 100% of the funds going directly to the charity. Overall, the organization has raised over $41 million across 37 marathons.
