Summary
Baldur’s Gate 3is packed to the brim with fun and difficult boss encounters. No two are quite the same. Each one incorporates variousDungeons & Dragonsmonsters and mechanics to reward players for staying on their toes.
The bosses inBaldur’s Gate 3Acts 1 and 2 tended to prioritize environmental hazards and puzzle-solving skills, allowing players to rely on their wits to make up for their lower levels. Act 3 does away with this trait. At this point, players are leveled up and have all the best gear, which means the training gloves are officially off. Act 3 bosses are the ultimate challenge to player’s skills, powers, and teamwork, though some are better than others.
10Viconia Devir
A Callback That Shows Shar’s Grip Is A Powerful One
Fans of previousBaldur’s Gatetitles had some mixed feelings about Viconia Devir’s return inBaldur’s Gate 3. Their previous efforts to persuade her against the path of Shar were ultimately thwarted, as she’s now her enclave’s Mother Superior and Shadowheart’s abusive foster parent.
More frustrating still was her boss fight. The House of Grief is notorious amongst even the most skillful gamers, with every single enemy unloading Necrotic damage and Darkness spells. It’s a tough fight that relies a lot on player positioning, but it’s more frustrating than it is strategic.
9Gortash
A Tyrant With An Army Of Machines
After the absolute masterpiece that was the fight against Ketheric Thorm and the Apostle of Myrkul, many fans were disappointed when it came time to fight the other Chosen of the Dead Three. Gortash is definitely just as compelling story-wise, but he’s a politician first and a fighter second. And it shows.
At the end of the day, Gortash is just a man, relying on machines rather than his own power. And, if players have already taken out his Iron Throne and the Steel Watch Foundry, thefight is almost embarrassingly easy. It’s almost like hewantsplayers to kill him.
8Orin the Red
While she’s no Ketheric either, Orin the Red is still a fun boss battle in her own right. Deep inthe Temple of Bhaal, she’s got her legion of serial killers and the blessings of the Dread Lord himself to back her up, as well as a companion held hostage.
Beating this fight relies on plenty of AOE damage and the ability to strike Orin’s Slayer form multiple times in quick succession. Her Unstoppable feature combined with her follower’sSanctuaryprotection can be frustrating, but it makes sense that a den of bloodthirsty murderers would fight dirty.
7Steel Watch Titan
The Creation That Surpasses Its Creator
This monstrous marvel of engineering took a genius like Gortash, the neural networking of illithids, and the slave labor of the Gondians to complete, and it sure paid off. The Steel Watch Titan is like Act 1’s construct boss, Grym, amped up to 11. Ithits like a literal tank, has loads of HP, and several Steel Watch minions (which are already tough to beat on their own).
Players need to keep their party spread out to minimize collateral damage, balancing melee attacks and Lightning spells as much as possible. And when the time comes, everybody needs to take cover, because it’ll explode in fiery fury.
6Lorroakan
A Powerful Wizard Who Also Happens To Be An Arrogant Jerk
This entitled weasel of a man embodies all the worst traits of wizards. An arrogant jerk lounging in his fancy tower, mistreating his underlings, and stealing power he has no right to. Within minutes of meeting him, players were chomping at the bit to wipe the floor with this guy.
But for all his puffed-up boasting, Lorroakandoesn’t go down easily. He’s got some powerful spells, amped up by the elements he’s got bound to his will. Even with the Nightsong’s help, it takes some serious talent to knock this wizard off his high horse for good.
5Ansur
It wouldn’t be aDungeons & Dragons-inspired game without a dragon in a dungeon! Ansur isn’t just a fearsome lightning-breathing dragon - he’s anundeadlightning-breathing dragon. And he’s every bit as cool as that sounds.
And just like one might expect fromfighting a dragon, he’s got a ton of HP and a breath attack that covers the entire arena. Players better duck for cover, down a potion of Lightning Resistance, and pray they brought enough Arrows of Dragon Slaying. This big lizard has refused to die for centuries, and it’s not about to start now.
4Sarevok
Battle Against The Grandson Of Bhaalspawn
Now,thisis how you do a callback! Act 3 really delves into Baldur’s Gate’s history with the Bhaalspawn, so it only makes sense to bring backtheBhaalspawn. Sarevok Anchev’s name strikes fear in the hearts of every Baldurian, and he far surpasses his reputation.
He and his Bhaalist tribunalhit hard and are even harder to hit back. Players will need to bring along their strongest fighters and hit Sarevok with everything they’ve got in order to win. Don’t hold back anything against the Dread Lord’s progeny. He certainly won’t.
3Auntie Ethel
A Diabolical Rematch With Act One’s Hag
Fighting Auntie Ethel was ahighlight of Act 1, so when she came back to life for further mischief in Act 3, players were stoked. And with a child missing, and an anti-hag support group on the warpath, the stakes were high for this second and final round.
This fight is far tougher than the first, with players also needing to rescue the child in her stomach before it’s too late. Oh,anddestroy the sickly green shrooms that keep Ethel from truly dying. She never makes things easy, but that’s why people love her.
2Cazador
Stop Astarion’s Abusive Master From Becoming A Vampire Ascendant
Astarion fans knewthis battle would be legendary. Cazador Szaar is everything a vampire lord should be. His Misty Form allows him to glide across and battlefield, avoiding damage. His spells and weapon attacks are devastating, and he even takes Astarion out of the initiative order for the first few turns (assuming players brought him along).
There are several ways to slow down or interrupt the ritual before Cazador can rise as the Vampire Ascendent. But players need to move quickly because once the ritual is completed, the real fight has only just begun…
1Raphael
A Devil Who Sings His Own Boss Music
There are no words to express how awesome this fight is. Players are just on the cusp of escaping the House of Hope, only to be intercepted by one seriously ticked-off Raphael. The music kicks in, the soul pillars rise, and his whopping 666 HP health bar appears. It quickly dawns on the player that they might have made a terrible mistake trying to rob this guy.
Raphael is easily one of the best boss fights in the entire game, managing to be exceptionally difficult without being frustrating. What helps keep the fight fun is the fact that Raphael is literally singing his own theme song the entire time. He’s really living his best Disney villain life right now.
