Summary
The Legend of Zeldafranchise is known for many things, such as puzzles and exploration, in addition to great combat and mechanics that are added throughout different temples. However, one of the most notable aspects that is a constant in the franchise is boss fights that are beautifully designed and constantly interesting to experience.
Ocarina of Timeis considered by many to be one of the very best, if not the best, entries in theLegend of Zeldaseries. Whether players have played it recently, they are likely to remember a lot of their older experiences from playingOcarina of Time, particularly some of the amazing boss fights that appeared to challenge players throughoutone of the hardest Zelda games.
6Barinade
Most of the best boss fights that are featured inOcarina of Timetake place when Link is older, however, Barinade is one of the very best fights that young Link must engage in. Found inside Jabu-Jabu’s belly, this strange dungeon wasn’t a particularly difficult one for players but ended on a high note with an interesting boss fight.
Barinade is an electrical creature, as were many of the other enemies inside Jabu-Jabu’s belly. The great thing about this fight is that a wonderful mechanic, the boomerang, is the primary weapon that Link must use as he attempts to knock Barinade off the ceiling of the cavern. After this is done, Barinade charges at Link with a spinning attack, making for a great sequence of difficult challenges, which is more than is provided by most boss fights against Young Link.
5Volvagia
There are a number of truly greatdragon bosses in theLegend of Zeldafranchise, but the fight against Volvagia is so strange and amusing that it has to be mentioned. Almost everyLegend of Zeldaboss battle involves Link using a special mechanic more than anything else in order to win, in the Volvagia boss battle the specialized mechanic is the Megaton Hammer.
Using this, Link has to stun Volvagia by quite literally bonking him on the head with the hammer when the huge fiery snake pokes his head out. This strange but incredibly fun design for a boss battle is a great ending to the fire temple, in a wonderfully designed arena. However, Volvagia has a much sadder story told in theOcarina of Timemanga, where it is revealed that Link bought him as a baby, and they were friends before time skipped forward and Volvagia became corrupt.
4Twinrova
One of the highest-difficulty bosses that appears inOcarina of Time, Twinrova can be found at the conclusion of the Spirit Temple. This boss is made up of two terrifying creatures, Koume and Kotake, who actually raised the version of Ganondorf that appears inOcarina of Time. This connection, and their unnerving design, is already enough to make the Twinrova boss battle one of the most interesting in the game.
Besides that, the challenge is also great, as Link will have to use his mirror shield to reflect the attacks of the bosses back at them in order to survive and defeat them. This provides challenge, a great boss, and arena design, and is one of the climactic battles as the end ofOcarina of Timeapproaches and the final battle with Ganon looms ahead of players.
3Phantom Ganon
It is uncommon for Ganon to appear as an actual boss battleso early in aLegend of Zeldagame, but inOcarina of Time, he sends a phantom to challenge Link and to hinder his journey as only the fourth main boss of the game, residing at the conclusion of the Forest Temple.
This phantom version of Ganon gives players difficulty as he will leap from various paintings in the arena to charge at Link, making for a terrifying struggle as players attempt to prepare for him coming from anywhere. In addition to this, players get the chance to actually warm up for the final boss fight by experiencing the lightning balls that Ganon will also later use.
2Bongo Bongo
It may seem like a strange name for a boss, but the setting and boss fight itself are possibly even weirder. The Shadow Temple is one of the best unique ideasinOcarina of Time, having one of the best and creepiest designs in the entire franchise, inwhat is one of the darkest Zelda games. Players will have a tricky time navigating the dungeon, before finally reaching the end and challenging Bongo Bongo.
Between the design of this monstrous creature and the arena in addition to the mechanics used to battle him, Bongo Bongo is a challenging boss fight because players need to do so much simultaneously to succeed. Bongo Bongo will attack with his hands, players have to shoot at his eye and hands while ensuring that the Lens of Truth doesn’t run out of magic, due to Bongo Bongo becoming invisible if it does. All of this makes for a unique and highly entertaining, but challenging, boss battle.
1Ganondorf
While there are times in theLegend of Zeldafranchise where the final battle against Ganondorf isn’t the best in the game, it is by far the most challenging and complete version of a boss battle available inOcarina of Time. Not only is the design ofthis final, two-part battleagainst Ganon an epic conclusion, featuring great music and an incredible, intimidating boss, but it also puts together everything that players have experienced over the course of the game.
Many different mechanics were taught to Link throughoutOcarina of Time, needing to be used at various other boss battles. But in the last battle, Link can only defeat Ganondorf by using a wide variety of everything he has learned throughout the game. This is one of the best boss battles in the entire history of theLegend of Zeldafranchise, from forcing Link to fight without his master sword to the final few moments of confrontation between good and evil, the entire center of the franchise andOcarina of Timein particular, making for an incredible storyline in this game.
