As the summer months begin to kick in, gaming fans around the world are waiting with bated breath for the slew of announcements set to come from events such as Summer Game Fest and theXbox and Bethesda Games Showcase in June. These events are usually home to some of the biggest news stories of the year and gameplay reveals for some of the most anticipated games set to be released. That said, the bad news usually precedes them, and it has once again in this case, with Bethesda announcing that Arkane’s upcoming co-operative shooterRedfallhas been delayed to 2023.
Redfallwas first announced as part of the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase in 2021, and was set to be the first Xbox console exclusive title released under Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media, which was finalized last year. The game is coming from developer Arkane, which released its last game,Deathloop, as a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive in 2021, with an Xbox release expected later this year. Coming from Arkane’s Austin studio,Redfallis an open-world first-person shooter, seemingly inspired by titles such asLeft 4 Deadbut with Arkane’s unique flair for exciting and mechanically deep gameplay.

Bethesda announced today however thatRedfallwould be delayed to 2023 alongside the highly anticipated new IP from Bethesda Game Studios,Starfield. Both games have yet to reveal gameplay footage, thoughRedfallsuffers the worst from this delay as the game was originally slated for summer 2022. However, a lack of any updates from Xbox Game Studios or Bethesda meant that this grew increasingly unlikely as the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase for 2022 approaches.
Bethesda’s newly released message announcing the delays reveals that both games are slated to release within the first half of 2023. This leaves the PlayStation 5 and PC releases ofGhostWire: Tokyoas the only Bethesda published title to release in 2022,outside of an expected Xbox release ofDeathloop. As for Xbox Game Studios titles as a whole, it’s not yet known how Microsoft plans to patch the hole left in its lineup for the year. Many fans are expecting Turn 10 Studios’Forza: Motorsportto be released this year, however Microsoft has not yet confirmed whether this is planned or not.
This does however bolster Microsoft’s plans for 2023, whichreportedly include releasingRedfallandStarfieldalongside Obsidian Entertainment’sAvowedandSenua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. These are just rumors for now however, as some of these projects are also likely to be given more time.
Redfallwill launch exclusively for PC and Xbox Series X/S in the first half of 2023.
