As with all looter shooters, the quest for new and better guns never truly ends inBorderlands 3. This is evident with the rise of various Wedding Invitation builds after it was introduced into the game, the need to grind for more weapons following the 3-level cap increase, and at least some of the excitement for the forthcomingGuns, Love, and Tentacles DLC. Now, following a recent update, a surprising shotgun has become the apex weapon of its class, so fans may want to dust it off and check it out.
The Lob is by no means a new legendary shotgun inBorderlands 3; it is, however, the new best shotgun in the game. Prior to a recent update, its damage output was pitiful, its magazine was small, and it only fired one orb. The recent update buffed it in every regard, increasing its damage output by an insane amount, jumping the magazine from 4 shots to 12, and actually firing three orbs instead of one.

The real test inBorderlands 3for any weapon is, of course,Mayhem Mode 4. Here, the Wedding Invitation proved its the best sniper rifle currently in the game because it could one-shot a majority of enemies and even some bosses. As a shotgun,Borderlands 3players shouldn’t expect to necessarily one shot everything, but it’s a real boss melter based on how its damage works.
Essentially, the three orbs will deal damage as they pass through an enemy, dealing splash and elemental damage to them. This means that a majority of enemies will fall after a couple of shots at most, especially if players are good at hitting with orbs. For large enemies and bosses, this is a huge boon for the three orbs, but ironically enough, the gun doesn’t really perform well againstGravewardand Agonizer, a couple of big bosses. This is because the orbs will just hit once and not pass through, with the bosses acting as a wall of sorts against the Lob.
The irony here is twofold, as for anyone who wishes to obtain the Lob viaBorderlands 3’s dedicated drops, they will actually need to grind Graveward, a boss the gun itself is ineffective against. Irony aside, it’s well worth the grind in order to try out for one’s self, but better yet, because it is not a new weapon, some may just want to check their bank to see if they have an old one stashed.
Then, combined with certain builds, it becomes even more of a force to be reckoned with. It’s not the perfect-for-any-type-type-of-build weapon, though it’s not necessarily a bad addition, but with the right buffs, The Lob reaches its heights inBorderlands 3.Amara character builds, for example, can buff it with 300%+ extra damage after phaseslamming in some cases. How players choose to use it, moving forward into and prior to Guns, Love, and Tentacles, it seems the Wedding Invitation and the Lob sit at the top of the meta game.
Borderlands 3is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
