The SNES entry revolutionized the JRPG genre and is often remembered as one of thebest RPGs of its eraandCross, while featuring several departures from the format of the first game, still sees frequent fan requests for remasters and remakes. Now, a recent announcement from one of the franchise’s main composers has speculation about a newChronotitle stirring once again.

Rumors of aChrono Crossremake have been circulating for months as several leaks have pointed towards theChrono Triggersequel finally receiving a long-awaited remaster to bring the game into the modern era.Chrono Crosscollaborated with popular mobile RPGAnother Edenlast month after being previously leaked and an Nvidia database leak from September claimed that a remastered version of the classic PlayStation RPG may be in development. On Friday,Chronoseries composer Yasunori Mitsuda teased fans on Twitter with an upcoming project, sparking rumors of a remake.

The tweet from Mitsuda thanked fans for the birthday wishes left for the composer on his 50th birthday on Friday and expressed his desire to show his gratitude through his upcoming work. Mitsuda claimed that his new project could be revealed as early as next month, though he did not divulge any information as to what the mystery project will be. Previous leaks reported that a musician was working ona major PlayStation remakewhich Mitsuda was believed to be connected to.

A return to theChronoseries would be a long time coming for Square-Enix with official means to play the 2000 RPG mostly being lost to time.Chrono Crosswas re-released on the PlayStation Network in 2011 as one ofthe service’s PS one Classicsbut is not available on the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 stores.Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, has seen multiple re-releases over the 25+ years since its release, most recently coming to Steam in 2018.

A potentialChrono Crossremaster comes as Square Enix has a plethora of massive releases on the horizon. The developer recently brought the ongoingFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketo PCand has several big-name games set to launch in the first few months of 2022 including anotherFinal Fantasygame inStranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Originand the Switch exclusiveTriangle Strategy.Alongside the highly-anticipatedFinal Fantasy 16, a potentialChrono Crossremaster or remake would only accentuate an already stacked line-up for the JRPG juggernaut.
