Crusader Kings 3is shaping up to be a game with a rich modding community, just like its predecessor.Many franchise veterans fondly rememberCrusader Kings 2’s post-apocalyptic North American mod, “After the End Fan Fork,” and the self-explanatory “A Game of Thrones Mod.“However,Crusader Kings 3modders are seeking to bring a different medieval fantasy series into the game:The Lord of the Rings.
Crusader Kings 3is already a robust, complex game, and it has included some elements in the base game that were made available via DLC inCK2like playable rulers from more parts of the map than just Europe. Even without mods, the game is capable of creating some truly interesting stories, which is made even more complex with the roleplay and dynasty control elements.

The officialCrusader Kings 3Twitter account spotlighted the “LoTR: Realms in Exile” mod today, which allows the player to step into the shoes of the Riders of Rohan, a heroic cavalry that features in the franchise’s books and films.This CK3 modding projectintends to branch off from just one group of people eventually, and plans to gradually add in experiences from the rest of Middle-earth.
Players can choose to play as Theoden, the King of Rohan; as the backstabbing wizard Saruman the White; or even as Wulfgar Brynjarsson of Dunland, a character from the “Age of the Ring” mod for thestrategy gameBattle for Middle-earth. The mod creators promise an incredibly detailed map made by modders from teams that have worked withCK2, Imperator: Rome,andEuropa Universalis 4.The mod is still a work-in-progress, but the Riders of Rohan experience is currently playable.
The mod’s Steam Workshop page mentions it is looking for writers, artists, and modders who share a passion both forThe Lord of the RingsandCrusader Kings 3. The hiring call mentions that people with a specific interest or area of expertise in particularLoTRevents or places are welcome, as the modding project plans to hit more areas of Middle-earth and make this an even morehigh-quality CK3 mod. Those interested can join the team’s Discord to share their work.
While some people preferusingCK3to cannibalize the Popeand enact other silly situations, other people will spend hours trying to represent their favorite fandoms in-game. Of course, given the high level of complexity inCrusader Kings 3, pretty much any major pursuit will take a ton of time and effort, and everyone has different goals and interests in playing strategy games such as these.
