TheDark Soulstabletop RPG seemed like a great idea for fans of the franchise at first as most FromSoftware titles transport players to a fantasy setting. However, unlike the kinder fantasy worlds of J.R.R Tolkien and Brandon Sanderson,Dark Soulsis famous for having dark loreand a setting that seems to punish its inhabitants for even thinking of a better life. For fantasy RPG players who love grimdark settings,Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Gameseemed to allow for a fresh and grueling tabletop experience.

However,Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Gamedidn’t live up to the hypefor many fans. Those in Europe and North America who’d preordered the collector’s edition of the game received it early, and began to pick apart theDark Soulstabletop RPG, finding plenty of bugs inside. From misspellings to rules that contradicted the game, to spells that became more difficult to cast the more a player progressed, the game had plenty of glaring issues that players wasted no time in pointing out. They criticized the game’s developer Steamforged for its seemingly unfinished game.

Now, Steamforged has responded to the criticism ofDark Souls: The Roleplaying Gamewith an apology. The developer first thanked theDark Soulscommunity for all its feedback, stating that it has listened to the comments made and recognized the importance of the issues within the game. Rather than release online supplements and rule changes, Steamforged is offering fans a new copy of the printed rulebook which will fix the issues ofDark Souls: The Roleplaying Game.

As these issues are plentiful within the initial rulebook, this will likely result in a delay before fans can get their hands on a new printed copy. Steamforged promises that details on a new release date and how fans can get a copy ofDark Souls: The Roleplaying Gamewill be coming soon. One of the main sources of the issues fans have pointed out is in Steamforged’s combination ofDark Soulslore withDungeons and Dragonsas a gameplay base. This led to things likeclasses crossing over from Dungeons and Dragonsthat didn’t exist inDark Souls, such as the Paladin class.

Many fans were hyped forDark Souls: The Roleplaying Gamewhen it was first revealedback in December of 2021, as it looked to be another great addition to a stacked lineup of tabletop games coming out in 2022. In its current state it won’t dethroneDungeonsand Dragonsas the most popular tabletop RPG, butDark Souls: The Roleplaying Gamewill at least see some decent fixes soon, hopefully removing the initial disappointment fans received.
