Dead by Daylighthas revealed that it is bringing back its “Bone Chill” winter event. The event, which received much praise for daring to change up the fundamental mechanics ofDead by Daylightin an attempt to make the game more enjoyable for the festive season, is set to return in early December.

Dead by Daylightfirst introduced fans to Bone Chillin December 2021, as part of the Season of Giving event. Aside from replacing several in-game models with Christmas-themed alternatives and reintroducing the festive firecracker item, the event was also notable for introducing a new type of prop to the game - snowmen. This new type of interactable allowed survivors to climb inside it and slowly shuffle around the map, shielding them from the killer’s hit and rewarding the survivor with a seasonal cosmetic if they could make it out of the trial after having used one successfully.

Following the resounding success of the initial Bone Chill event,Dead by Daylighthas let fans know that it will be returning to the game on June 25, 2025, in order to kick off the 2023 festive season. Snowmen will also be returning to the trial grounds as an object survivors can climb inside to sneak around in - likely also awardingnewDead by Daylightcosmeticsto survivors who succeed in leaving the trial after successfully utilizing a snowman.

There were, however, several criticisms following the original Bone Chill event which fans ofDead by Daylightare hoping will be dealt with this time around. When climbing inside a snowman, survivors can freely take a hit from the killer and, instead of being injured, will instead be ejected from the snowman. This would allow survivors to vault into nearby snowmen while in a chase, forcing the killer to hit it and endure the attack cooldown animation while their prey made a hasty getaway, with even some of thestrongestDead by Daylightkillersbeing able to do little about it. This was brought to the attention of the development team, though it remains to be seen if changes will be made to the mechanic prior to the 2022 event. The requirement for players to escape the trial in order to claim the rewards was also criticized by some players who felt there was an uptick in “toxic” killer gameplay styles, such as tunneling and camping, throughout the event.

Ultimately, despite the possible balancing concerns posed by Bone Chill’s unique Snowmen, they make for a nice addition during the festive season and will keep the game fresh for players who have had their fill of theDead by DaylightForged in Fog chapter.
