Bungie has revealed thatDestiny 2’s upcoming Lightfall DLC is going to reuse the base weapon geometry from the Shadowkeep expansion pack. WhereasDestinyhas never shied away from reusing old assets and making them new again as part of a subsequent content launch, the second game’s major yearly expansion packs haven’t usually leveraged this approach.

The matter of sunsetting and eventually reissuing old weaponry is a long and storied discussion in the variousDestiny 2communities. While some players don’t mind getting another shot at earning up-to-date versions of old favorites, others would much prefer if Bungie would focus purely on all-new gear, instead. The Lightfall DLC is, from the looks of it, about to fire up these arguments anew.

While eagle-eyed fans may have already spotted some familiar-looking weapons in the Lightfall DLC promotional materials, the newDestiny 2Lightfall Exotics traileroutright confirmed that this wasn’t a mistake. Namely, after the trailer came out, Bungie updated the expansion pack’s promo page to include high-quality renders and screenshots, one of which showed off some of the new weapons, though not everyone might agree with the notion of them being “new,” as it were.

More specifically, the showcased Lightfall sniper, fusion, pulse rifle, handcannon, and heavy grenade launcher all share their base geometry withDestiny 2’s previously reissued Shadowkeep weapons. The core difference between the two sets of gear is that the Shadowkeep items feature a variety of trinkets, amulets, and dried fruit that Eris Morn tied to them to stave off Darkness Nightmares. Lightfall items, on the other hand, are sleek and shiny, reflecting the neon-laden visuals of Neomuna itself.

This approach isn’t without merit, it’s worth pointing out. While the Golden Age of humanity might still be one ofDestiny 2’s biggest unresolved mysteries, it is an established matter of fact that pre-Collapse technology was often far superior to anything the Vanguard can provide to modern-day Guardians. Given that Neomuna sprung up using Golden Age tech and Eris Morn looted the former Golden Age facilities on Luna, the game’s lore could very well support the notion that these same weapon assets would be shared between the two locales.

Not everyone is going to be thrilled with this approach, however.Lightfall is a hugeDestiny 2DLCthat’s set to bring about massive changes to almost every aspect of the game, and some players are sure to consider the Lightfall gear to be a simple case of Bungie reissuing old stuff after slapping a new coat of paint on it. Whether Bungie’s approach to Lightfall weaponry will work or not in practice remains to be seen.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
