This week,Destiny 2unlocked a new mission that has a greater mystery to solve. The community is working hard to unlock all the secrets to that mystery, but Bungie was smart to warn them. According to the studio, themystery is a marathon, not a sprint, suggesting that it will take a while to eventually solve.

But even thoughDestiny 2players don’t know what the mission’s secrets will eventually unlock, there are some theories. Some believe that it will lead to an exotic weapon, some think that it will tie into theupcoming Empyrean Foundation event, and a few think it is the preamble to the next season.

What Does the Corridors of Time Mystery Unlock?

Whatever theDestiny 2mystery eventually unlocks, though, it needs to be something meaningful for the player base. Right now theDestiny 2community is feeling a bit jadedabout the game and this latest surprise has given them a lot of excitement and discussion. However, if the eventual “reward” for solving this puzzle is something disappointing, it would be yet another bullet point on a long list of problems plaguing the game right now.

Arguably the biggest disappointment would be if the mission was timegated and connected with the upcomingBastion exotic fusion rifle quest. Players already know that the exotic quest is coming and datamines have already revealed what the steps are to unlock Bastion. So if players simply needed to wait until January 28th and then the answer just appeared, then that would be a very deflating situation.

A lot of the discontent surroundingDestiny 2right now is that Season of Dawn is both lacking in content and lacking in unpredictability. TheSundial activityfeels like a lesser Menagerie. The weapons in Season of Dawn are not particularly exciting. And the lack of attention to PvP is making Crucible fans worried about their favorite slice of the game.

With that in mind, there grows a larger expectation around the Corridors of Time mission and what it could deliver. At the same time, players are worried that this will end up being another Niobe Labs situation. For those that might not remember, Niobe Labs was a puzzle room meant to unlock the final forge during Season of the Forge, but its final few puzzles were so obtuse no one could figure them out. Eventually,Bungie had to unlock the Bergusia Forgeand offer follow-up hints for players to solve Niobe Labs.

But the conversation around Niobe Labs was strong enough to reinvigorate theDestiny 2community and that’s the same thing that is happening again. Streamers are spending excessive hours testing permutations, taking screenshots, and logging data. To them, whether or not theCorridors of Time missionunlocks something cool is beside the point because they have new content to show, but the community at large needs this to turn into something.

New Exotic Weapon on the Way

As far as what the mission could offer that would be satisfying, the community has some ideas. Arguably the best is that the sword seen lying on the grave in the mission would become an exotic for players to use. Surprise exotics like the Whisper of the Worm or Outbreak Perfected have turned into some of the best weapons in the game (pre-nerfs) and this sword could be that. Either way, it’s hard to beat a cool looking sword with a cool ability. Even if Bungie just brought back the swords fromDestiny 1, there might be enough excitement to justify the effort.

It shouldn’t be long beforeDestiny 2players finally solve the puzzle, so keep a lookout for more information on Friday. Considering that someDestiny 2players have forgone sleep in an effort to help solve the puzzle we hope that the reward is worth it. But if it’s not, it would not be surprising to see some harsh criticism for Bungie this weekend.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
