Summary

Actor Devora Wilde has faced online harassment after revealing her involvement inDragon’s Dogma 2on social media. The negativity appears to stem from some of the controversies that have surroundedDragon’s Dogma 2since its release, but which are completely unrelated to Wilde herself.

Capcom’s latest RPG has so far generated polarizing post-release buzz. On one hand,Dragon’s Dogma 2reviews have been nothing short of stellar. At the same time, Capcom’s decision to implement a variety of microtransactions into the game, which were not present in the copies given to reviewers, prompted a vocal backlash from the fandom. The game’s problematic PC performance further contributed to the criticism that many players have voiced since its debut.

But the ongoing backlash now appears to be getting quite misguided, having most recently reached Devora Wilde, an actor best known for her roles of Lae’zel inBaldur’s Gate 3and Nika Yankovich inCyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. After announcing her involvement in the game in a March 22 TikTok post (via TheGamer), Wilde was bombarded with hundreds of comments condemning Capcom’s monetization practices, something she has no control over. While some of the responses simply denounced the practice of including microtransactions in a single-player game, others have shared sarcastic remarks asking Wilde if her character is “paywalled.”

An even fiercer influx of negativity has recently been aimed at YouTuber Suzi “TheSphereHunter” Hunter, who also got a chance to design one ofDragon’s Dogma 2Pawns. Her March 20 review of the game, titled “Dragon’s Dogma 2is actually AMAZING,” has generated so much harassment that she specifically called out the backlash as entirely misguided and “unfair” in a subsequently stickied comment. The YouTuber clarified that she was neither paid for her contribution to the game nor was she compensated to promote it. Hunter pleaded with viewers who feel so strongly about the issue to address their concerns over the game’s monetization practices at Capcom.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Launch Was a Huge Success Despite Controversies

The controversy surrounding the RPG’s microtransactions has already resulted inDragon’s Dogma 2being review-bombed. Its current Steam ratings are classified as “Mixed,” based on more than 26,500 user impressions. Even so, and in spite of the widespread criticism aimed at its PC performance, the game has already set a new record for the most-played Capcom Steam game, peaking at nearly 185,000 concurrent players on launch day, thus surpassing theResident Evil 4remake by roughly 10%.

As for its lack of optimization,Capcom has already responded to the ongoingDragon’s Dogma 2backlashby saying it’s looking into making the game run smoother on PC. The Japanese company did not give any indication that it plans to remove the widely criticized microtransactions from the game.
