Summary
Over the years, the RPG genre has made a wide assortment of features into genre staples. Players can often expect open-world locales, choice-based gameplay, player freedom, and monsters to conquer. Along with that, many RPGs have also included the concept of carrying capacity, which limits how much players can take on their journey.Dragon’s Dogma 2as a fantasy RPG also includes many of these features, but for some reason it does not feel like Capcom can decide if it likesDragon’s Dogma 2’s carrying capacity mechanic or not.
Just like withmany Bethesda RPGs, players may quickly become encumbered during theirDragon’s Dogma 2adventure. This forces them to be more selective in what they pick up, yet the game has also offered them countless ways to fix that problem. From giving players access to the Pawns' inventories to collectible items that increase the capacity, it feels like the game is trying to fix the annoyances of carrying capacity, even though the studio chose to include it in the first place.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Cannot Make Up Its Mind About Carrying Capacity
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Players May Often Be Encumbered
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s characters all have their own specific max carry weight, which can be found in the Status section of the menu. Any item that players pick up will contribute to said weight, with different items weighing different amounts depending upon their size. As that carry weight goes up, players will slow down as they begin to be weighed down by their inventory. And once they pass that maximum limit, they will be unable to move much until they offload some goods.
RPG fans should know how this feature works by now, as many RPGs have been adopting it for years;Baldur’s Gate 3limits how much players can carry,The Witcher 3: Wild Huntmade players deal with a similar system, and evenDark Soulshas included it. While it may sometimes be a bit of a nuisance, it also has a basis in reality, and as of now, it does not seem like it will be going anywhere anytime soon. That being said, it also seems like Capcom may not like the concept very much.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Also Gives Players Countless Ways to Fix That Problem
Dragon’s Dogma 2is packed with different ways to increase said carry weight. It will increase when players level up, for instance. Players can also consume Golden Trove Beetles to increase it by .15kg, discover powerful rings that increase it by 5kg,equip the Thew Augmentwhich increases it by 10kg, or give their Pawns the items instead. Likewise, those Pawns can equip the Augment and wear the rings to increase their own capacity. All of that should make it so that players do not have to worry about the carry weight, so it seems strange that Capcom would include it in the first place.
So, if the studio did not want to have players worry about it, then it may have been better to leave the feature out in the first place, though as a game riddled with friction and a lack of QoL features it makes sense to throw one more on the pile. There is nothing wrong with including carrying capacity ina game likeDragon’s Dogma 2, but it’s more of an awkward circumstance than anything else.
