EA believes that, ifCall of Dutywere to leave PlayStation consoles in the future, it would make a great opportunity for theBattlefieldfranchise. There have been some concerns that, with Microsoft’s plans to purchase Activision Blizzard, theCall of Dutyfranchise could become an Xbox exclusive. While both Sony and Microsoft officials have stated thatCall of Dutywon’t be leaving PlayStation anytime soon, the concern among gamers still persists that the iconic shooter series could eventually only be playable on Xbox and PC.TheBattlefieldfranchise has often been seen as an alternative toCall of Duty. While both games are first-person shooters, they do have plenty of differences, withBattlefieldoften having a larger scale in terms of the skirmishes players find themselves in. However, recently theBattlefieldfranchise has produced some entries that haven’t been received well.Battlefield 5faced criticism for its depiction of WW2, whileBattlefield 2042received backlash for its bugs and glitches at launch.RELATED:Battlefield 2042 Reveals What’s Coming in the Season 2 Battle PassEA’s CEO Andrew Wilsonhas acknowledged these recent missteps withBattlefield, stating that he doesn’t think “[EA] delivered in the last two iterations” of the series. However, Wilson believes thatBattlefieldcould have a great opportunity before it. Speaking during a recent Goldman Sachs event, Wilson said that being “platform agnostic” withBattlefield, meaning that the games hold no true loyalty to Xbox, PC, or PlayStation, is a “tremendous” opportunity in a time when the future of theCall of Dutyfranchise is slightly uncertain.

While Wilson entertains the prospect ofCall of Dutyleaving PlayStation behind, as stated, it doesn’t seem like this will be happening soon, becauseModern Warfare 2andWarzone 2will both be available on Sony hardware. If it takes a few years forCall of Dutyto move away from PlayStation, though, this gives EA the time to rebuildBattlefield’sreputation. Already, it seems that there are big changes coming in the future forBattlefield. Recently, it was announced thatHaloco-creator Marcus Lehto would be building a newBattlefieldcampaignfor EA.

While the introduction of a story campaign into a newBattlefieldgame would be a positive step for EA in rebuilding the reputation of its shooter franchise, many believe that more work needs to be done beforeBattlefieldcan be seen as a competitor withCall of DutyBattlefield 2042, to improve that game after its poorly received launch.

Battlefield 2042is now available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC.
