FromSoftware’sElden Ringfeels very much like a game players will keep returning to for years to come, with players likely still making discoveries no matter how many times they play. There’s likely a lot left to be discovered inThe Lands Between, and its dedicated player base will no doubt find them.

For example, one hard-to-noticenerf to group boss fights inElden Ringwas recently discovered—added in Update 1.04 but not listed on the patch notes. It essentially nerfed the AI of some, not all, group boss fights to make them less likely to attack at the same time and for one to lead as a primary attack. Another recent discovery, though, is more mechanical—how the wind works inElden Ring.

Redditor The-Nick-Of-Time shared their discovery, showcasing how the flames in a building move when they are outside it. ThisElden Ringplayer is standing in the wind, with rain coming in from the left. Even though the flames are not outside, they are being blown to the right—as they should if it were wind and they were outside. But when players step inside (even though the wind is still blowing outside), the flames stand straight up.

Redditor Pairadockcickle added on this, revealing a ton of mechanics work just like this. The lighting exterior, the location of the sun, the field of view, distance, and even stuff like the sky’s appearance when moving fromElden Ring’s Limgrave to Caelidare all player-centric. Even shadows and an area’s color grading are impacted this way. In short, all the game mechanic’s revolve around the player.

Many took this in stride and joked about how the universe revolved around them, and some even joked about this being officiallore forElden Ring’s Tarnished playable character. Of course, it’s not—it’s just the in-game mechanics—but it is hilarious to think about nonetheless. This concept itself isn’t necessarily new, having been done in games before, but it’s the depth of detail in its application inElden Ringthat stands out.

Elden Ringmay not the most detailed open-world map out there, but it’s how it uses all of the above, distance, messing with the player’s senses, and so on that makes its details truly stand out. IfElden Ringwere a test of how a Souls game could work in an open-world environment, then details like this are what make it pass with flying colors.

Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
