Simplistic in its approach,Wind Breakeris centered around its protagonist, Haruka Sakura, who, from an early age, is made painfully aware of what it means not to fit in with society. Due to his rather unconventional appearance, Sakura is made an outcast with deep feelings of inferiority towards his peers.

However, Sakura is determined to turn his weaknesses into strengths, and his starting point is Furin High School. The series boasts quite a peculiar cast of characters, much like the infamous time-loop high school anime series, with each character diverse and different from the rest. After a successful 2024 opening season that established most ofWind Breaker’s main characters, a sequel is currently airing as part of theSpring 2025 anime lineup.

Wind Breaker Hajime Umemiya Bofurin

The focus is on the anime, so characters who are still manga-exclusive will not be included.

Updated on July 30, 2025 by Mark Sammut:Wind Breaker season 2 is nearly over, and it has been fantastic. Hopefully, the anime proves to be successful enough to warrant another sequel, and the adaptation has arguably yet to reach the manga’s peak. Until then, let’s highlight two more majorWind Breaker characters: Kiryu and Tsugeura.

Wind Breaker Character Chart

To simplify the process of learning the ages, birthdays, and heights of the mainWind Breakercharacters, the information has been collected into a table.

Jo Togame

Shishitoren Vice Leader

The Second-in-Command atthe rival high school, Shishitoren,Jo Togame, first appears laid-back and calm. However, his demeanor fades into a somewhat fickle unpredictability. Togame despises weak people and is shown to be arrogant and ruthless in treating his subordinates, who show that they are not up to the standard, which he considers a strength.

However, his arrogance comes from personal strength. Despite being just a high schooler, he is a fearsome individual blessed with above-average physical strength, ensuring that he is considerably stronger than most students his age.

Choji Tomiyama

Shishitoren Leader

The leader of the rival high school, Shishitoren,Choji Tomiyama, appears like a child due to his small stature. However, beyond his small appearance lies a twisted individual with apenchant for violenceand fights, as shown when he challenges Umemiya to a fight and throws a tantrum until the latter finally agrees.

While he appears harmless, his personality darkens at the slightest form of violence. He constantly looks for stronger opponents to test his strength, a trait that led him to the top at Shishitoren.

Masaki Anzai

Vaisravana Unit Member

OK,Masaki Anzaiis not the most attention-grabbingWind Breakercharacter, but he is a relatively important part of season 2’s Keel Arc. A member of Sakura’s class and, by extension, unit, Masaki is not particularly strong, capable, or even all that charming. He is “ordinary,” or at least as ordinary as someone who is part of a gang that protects a town can be.

However, Masaki’s growing appreciation for and trust in Sakura help the latter break out of his shell, and he is effectively representative of the many Class 1–1 students who do not get much time in the sun. Shonen anime need afew weaker charactersto balance out the roster, as not every person should be a skilled martial artist who exists primarily to fight and become stronger. Masaki is also pretty brave, as he is willing to step up for his friends despite knowing he is probably going to get hurt.

Taiga Tsugeura

At the end ofWind Breaker’s second episode, Sakura and Nirei walk into Class 1-1, where they are introduced to roughly two dozen students at the same time. Most of these characters slip completely into the background and are barely distinguishable from each other; however, four figures are given special attention. While arguably theleast important of these four,Taiga Tsugeurais nevertheless a fun presence who can inject energy and comedy into any given scene.

Looking like an ’80s physio instructor, Tsugeura is defined by his dedication to exercise and an inherent desire to help those around him. Honestly, in another shonen anime, he could easily be a protagonist or one of the main supporting characters. InWind Breaker, he comes and goes sporadically, but he is often among the first to speak up when somebody like Sakura starts to drown in self-doubt.

Mitsuki Kiryu

Another one of Class 1-1’s identifiable personalities,Mitsuki Kiryustands out due to his relaxed attitude and confident fashion sense, both of which reflect his tendency to go against established social norms. In the anime, Kiryu has not done all that much so far, except for providing support during gang battles and occasionally contributing outside of fight sequences. As he comes across as Tsugeura’s opposite in many ways, they can, at times, feel like a double-act, despite not seemingly getting along all that way.

Kiryu has a pretty interesting and sympathetic backstory involving his family, but the anime has yet to reach this point in the manga.

Kyotaro Sugishita

A member of Bofurin and a first-year student at Furin High School,Sugishitaappears relatively slow and aloof at first. He rarely shows any interest in people except for those suspected of disrespect towards Hajime Umemiya.

For unknown reasons, Sugishita is almost religiously devoted to the current leader of Bofurin, which leads him to be seen as a fanatic.Unusually tall for his age, Sugishita is not very interactive, as he hardly talks and is not particularly expressive, choosing to express himself primarily through his fists. Despite his aggressive tendencies, he is kind when the situation demands it.

Hayato Suo

Vice-Captain of the Vaisravana Unit

Arguably the strongest of the first years,Hayato Suois a member of Bofurin and, like Nirei, a vice-captain of the Vaisravana unit. Conspicuous due to his eye patch, Suo is typically always smiling and calm, even in the most extreme situations, and never shows any irritation or negative emotion, which makes him even more intimidating.

Carefully detailed and level-headed, Suo analyses situations critically and responds accordingly. While he may seem averse to violence, his proficiency in mixed martial arts lends credibility to his overall strength.

Akihiko Nirei

Like Sugishita,Akihiko Nireiis a first-year student at Furin High School and the vice-captain of Bofurin’s Vaisravana unit. Nirei is typically cheerful and calm but occasionally clumsy for various reasons.

Unlike most members of Bofurin, Nirei’s strengths do not lie in combat. He gets easily frightened whenever he has to face danger due to years of severe bullying in middle school. However, Nirei possesses great memorization and documentation skills, which are useful in most situations. Beyond his awkward tendencies, Nirei is one of the most influential first-years and shares a close relationship with Sakura.

Ren Kaji

Grade Captain Of Vaisravana Unit

Introduced late into season 1 and a prominent player inseason 2’s early episodes,Ren Kajiis Bofurin’s second-year grade captain, meaning he is pretty much regarded as his age group’s strongest fighter.

Always seen with a pair of headphones and coming across as relatively soft-spoken, Kaji’s laid-back demeanor paints an inaccurate image of an easy-going person. In reality, Kaji is a temperamental and aggressive fighter who is extremely dangerous when he gets going. That said, he leads his group with confidence.

Tasuku Tsubakino

Jikoku Team Leader

While debuting in season 1,Tasuku Tsubakinohad to wait until the sequel to be properly introduced, with the 18th episode being their true reveal. As a Four Heavenly King, Tsubaki is rightfully recognized as one of Bofurin’s most important and powerful members, and they have a fun personality that allows them to approach situations with empathy.

The character’s appearance tends to attract the most discourse, at least initially, but Tsubaki’s confidence and willingness to be true to themselves are their most defining traits. They found somewhere they feel like they belong in Furin, and they are just all-around nice vibes.

Toma Hiragi

Vaisravana Unit Leader

A third-year student at Furin High School,Toma Hiragiis one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Bofurin and the commander of the Vaisravana unit. Notable for his short, spiky hair, Hiragi is usually upset or stressed by the conflicts the Bofurin engages in.

More than the conflicts, Hiragi is also always on medication due to constant stomach pains, which began in his first year in high school. Usually, Hiragi appears as a rash individual atthe forefront of fightsand gang battles. However, he is also shown to be calm and level-headed at critical moments, specifically regarding his leadership.

Kotoha Tachibana

Waitress & Hajime’s Sister

The adoptive sister of the head of Bofurin,Kotoha Tachibana, is also a waitress at the Café Pothos. Unlike her adoptive brother, Kotoha is not a student and is somewhat opposed to violence, even though she strongly supports Umemiya.

Soft-spoken and kind, Kotoha is the first to take a liking to Sakura, noting how bright and distinct his eyes were. She is also shown to be quite as stern as she is kind when dealing with Sakura, her brother, and Nirei while maintaining respectful relationships with the older members of Furin’s community.

Hajime Umemiya

Bofurin Leader

Third-year studentHajime Umemiyais the leader of Bofurin and Furin High School. Conspicuous due to his gray hair and eyes, Umemiya comes across as warm and friendly and carries with himan infectious charismathat transmits to all members of Bofurin. Though his friendly demeanor can be overly characteristic, the opposite is the case when he is engaged in a fight, to the point where the disparity can be jarring even to his subordinates.

Due to his efforts in the Furin community, he is well-respected and loved by the community members, which extends to Bofurin as a whole. While Umemiya appears overly simplistic in his interactions, he is also deeply invested in the welfare of all under him and, by extension, the Furin community.

Haruka Sakura

Captain of the Vaisravan Unit

The series' protagonist,Haruka Sakura, is a first-year freshman at Furin High School and the first-year Vaisravana unit captain. After repeatedly being judged by his physical appearance, Sakura finally accepts the delinquent persona projected on him and comes to Furin to establish himself at Bofurin.

Unusually perceptive and reactionary, Sakura is painfully aware of how he is perceived by others, which results in his violent tendencies. However, despite his easy disposition to violence, Sakura abides strictly by his morals. He is shown to get uncomfortable when shown kindness and cannot deal with gratitude. His initial goal at Furin takes a new form when he learns that Bofurin uses its strength to protect the town, a trait that aligns withhis self-imbibed morals.
