Announced only a month and a half ago,Mortal Kombat 1is just two months away, and fan hype is starting to reach a fever pitch. After an incredible announcement trailer that confirmed this next entry would be another reboot for the universe,Mortal Kombat 1presented an even more impressive gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest, blowing fans away with the new graphics, more fluid animations, and some brand-new gameplay features like the new Kameo Fighter system. But even after those trailers, there’s a lot aboutMortal Kombat 1that fans still don’t know.

Currently, the vast majority of information surroundingMortal Kombat 1has come either from the game’s official website, or from the trailers and promotional materials released so far. While these have all confirmed thatMortal Kombat 1will take place inFire God Liu Kang’s new timeline, with beloved characters getting a fresh look and backstory, the exact changes to these fighters haven’t been specified just yet. What Mortal Kombat 1’s Bios Reveal About Its Fighters

The newly releasedMortal Kombat 1official bios start with potentially the game’s most important character, Liu Kang, the God of Fire. Granted his god powers at the end ofMortal Kombat 11after Raiden merged with Liu Kang, he took control of Kronika’s Hourglass, and forged a new timeline to fit his own preferences. Taking it all back to the beginning of the series once again, Liu Kang’s new timeline has ushered in a new age of peace, but it’s also affected some classic character dynamics along the way.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are two such fighters that have quite the altered backstory. As opposed to being mortal enemies in a never-ending quest for vengeance,Sub-Zero and Scorpion are now brothers, both loyal to the Lin Kuei. By the time ofMortal Kombat 1, Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s father, the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, has just died, and Sub-Zero has taken over in his stead. While Scorpion is apparently initially proud of his brother for stepping up, Sub-Zero’s rule over the Lin Kuei has caused some friction in their relationship, with Sub-Zero casting off some of the clan’s ancient traditions in an attempt to bring them into a new age and new position as one of Earthrealm’s most powerful clans.

Kitana and Mileena are another iconicMortal Kombatpair thatMortal Kombat 1is flipping on its head. Rather than being a deformedclone of Kitana, Mileenais her biological sister, and rightful heir to Outworld’s throne. Kitana shows no signs of jealousy towards her sister, and instead is happy to just fight at her side while she prepares to take the throne. However, Mileena is suffering from the lethal Tarkat disease, and while Kitana is helping her to hide the ailment, it’s causing Mileena to act impulsively, leading to the realm doubting her competency and instead rallying behind Kitana.

With his Elder God powers gone, Raiden is now just a mere mortal, and alongside Kung Lao, the two spend their days tolling the fields in their peaceful home village of Fengjian. While Raiden is pleased with his peaceful life, Kung Lao yearns for adventure, and he gets exactly that when Fire God Liu Kang asks the duo to join his team of Earthrealm champions. Just two more fighters have been confirmed forMortal Kombat 1so far, and that’s Johnny Cage and Kenshi.

WhileJohnny Cage’s backstoryremains pretty much the same, with him being a fading Hollywood star called for a greater purpose, Kenshi’s backstory is a little different. The Takahashi clan were once renowned warriors but lost a big battle 500 years ago, forcing them to join the Bakuto clan, which eventually became the Yakuza. Kenshi now longs to free his family from their Yakuza chains by finding his family’s long-lost sword, Sento.

Mortal Kombat 1will be released on Jul 28, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
