After the success of 2021’sGhostbusters: Afterlife, the gang are back in action with the release ofGhostbusters: Frozen Empire,which was released in movie theaters on Friday, March 22. Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace are joined by legacy cast members, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts as the action returns to New York City and the iconic Firehouse.

The all-star returning cast are joined by franchise newcomers, James Acaster as Lars Pinfield, Patton Oswalt as Dr Hubert Wartzki and Emily Alyn Lynd as a tortured ghost called Melody. There is also a special appearance byWilliam Atherton as Mayor Walter Peck, who returns to the franchise for the first time since the originalGhostbustersin 1984.

What is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire about?

The sequel toGhostbusters: Afterlifesees Gary, Callie, Trevor and Phoebe relocate to New York City, and live in the Ghostbuster’s firehouse, which has been re-opened with the help of Winston Zeddemore. They all work as Ghostbusters, and get themselves into trouble when they cause damage to the city when trying to hunt down a particularly troublesome ghost, and Mayor Peck orders Phoebe to be taken off the team as she’s underage, or he’ll shut theGhostbustersdown for good.

Ray Stanz is retired now, and runs a small shop, while appearing in a podcast run by the character from the last movie, known appropriately as Podcast. A man called Nadeem brings an ancient artifact into Ray’s shop to pawn, and intrigued by it, he takes it off Nadeem for a price. However, it unleashes an evil force which brings Ghostbusters new and old together to protect New York City and save the world from a second ice age.

How does Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire end?

After being sidelined from the Ghostbusters activities, Phoebe gains access to Winston Zeddemore’s supernatural research facility and extracts her own spirit from her body so that she can experience a short “ghost walk” with Melody. Soon after she does this, Melody reveals that she’d manipulated her into doing this in order for her spirit to be taken over by the villainous Garraka. It uses her spectral self to speak through her physical body and frees him from his imprisonment and facilitates his aim to unleash an ice storm that covers all of New York City.

Phoebe’s spirit is returned to her body, and she reunites with Callie, Gary, and Trevor, and they team up with Winston, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Janine Melnitz and thec rest of the gang consisting of Lucky Domingo, Nadeem, Lars Pinfield, Podcast to fight against Garraka at the firehouse. Garraka arrives, and the gang try to keep him at bay, but he freezes all the rays emitted by the proton packs, making them totally ineffective.

Down in the basement, Phoebe tells Melody she can’t rely on Garraka’s plan to end the human world to reunite her with her family members. Soon after, Garraka breaks open the containment unit located beneath the firehouse and unleashes all the ghosts they’d previously captured.

Phoebe emerges from the basement with her brand-new proton pack, which she’s coated in melted brass and causes damage to Garraka by firing proton rays at him. In addition to this, Melody lights a matchstick which enables Nadeem to hit Garraka with a powerful stream of fire. Nadeem and Phoebe hold Garraka off in order to allow Ray, Peter, Winston, and Janine to restart the Ghostbusters’ containment unit and trap Garraka.

After the victory, the Ghostbusters emerge from the firehouse and are greeted by the media and onlookers, while Mayor Peck arrives to try and discredit the Ghostbusters yet again, but Winston fights back and gains support from everyone else. He hails Phoebe as the hero, and gets her reinstated into the Ghostbusters. Gary, Callie, Trevor and Phoebe take off in the Ecto-1 in search of all the ghosts that escaped from the Firehouse during Garraka’s attack.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empirehas a post-credits scene which arrives in the early section of the credits, and there isn’t a second one at the very end of the credits.

The Mini Puft Marshmallows ghosts appear throughoutGhostbusters: Frozen Empire, and they return for the mid-credits scene, which shows them stealing a Puft marshmallow truck, after seeing one at a gas station. The Mini Puft Marshmallows drive off with the truck at the end of the scene, and what happens after this is left open-ended.
