Please Note: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for God of War Ragnarok.Proceed at your own risk.God of War Ragnarokdoes a great job of providing a unique portrayal of some of the most famous figures in Norse mythology, including Odin, Thor, and Heimdall. One of the best and most well-rounded performances, however, comes from a character that was notably absent during many of the major events that take place in mythology: Sif. As the wife of Thor and mother of Thrud, Sif plays a vital role in the decisions both characters make throughout the story ofGod of War Ragnarok, and is a constant reminder to both of them that their family is more important than Odin’s plans.

In mythology, Sif is barely even mentioned throughout the events recorded in the Eddas, whileGod of Wargives her some time, but not enough to truly outshine the other characters. Sif is portrayed as a loving yet powerful mother in theGod of Warseries and is one of the main reasons why both Thor and Thrud decide to stand against Odin in the end. While her role in mythology is heavily cut down,God of War Ragnarokdoes a great jobof delivering a unique portrayal of the Aesir Goddess.

Sif in Mythology

Sif plays a very small role in mythology and is often only associated with being the wife of Thor and the mother of Ullr and Thrud. She is often regarded as the Goddess of Fertility; however, this role is also shared by other gods such as Freyr and Freya, both of whom play more significant roles in mythology. Her most significant role in mythology comes when Loki steals her beautiful blonde hair, angering Thor and resulting in Loki commissioning the Dwarves to create multiple important Norse items includingThor’s hammer and Odin’s spear.

This is unfortunately where Sif’s role in mythology ends, as even her children, Ullr and Thrud, are barely mentioned in Norse scriptures. Her survival following the events of Ragnarok is unknown, though it is understood that she does not participate in the battle at Asgard. While Sif may seem like an unimportant character in Norse mythology, her role as Thor’s wifeand even her interactions with Loki lead to some of the most important moments.
