The CW’sGotham KnightsrecruitedGrace and Frankie’s Ethan Embry andCobra Kai’s Sunny Mabrey, and they seem perfectly suited for their respective roles. The real-life couple will also play a married duo on the show, and they’ll have a particular connection to the recently slain Batman. The titular team of unlikely allies will have another obstacle as they attempt to clear their names of suspicion while protecting Gotham City.

Mabrey will debut first onGotham Knightsepisode 5, where she will appear as Crystal Brown. The following episode will see Embry show up as Arthur Brown. These names may not sound familiar at first glance, but comic fans will recognize Arthur Brown as the real name of Batman villain Cluemaster. Many already suspected this character would appear inGotham Knights, particularly since his daughter Stephanie Brown/Spoiler (played by Anna Lore) is already a series regular.

Funnily enough, a statement fromGotham Knightsseries creators Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams (viaThe Hollywood Reporter) suggests Embry was considered for the part in large part due to Mabrey impressing them at her audition. “We were blown away by Sunny’s audition forGotham Knights,” they gushed. “It was immediately clear she had the expansive emotional range needed to play this deeply polarizing character. And then we were delighted to discover that Sunny’s husband is an actor who has many fans among our cast, crew and writers.”

“Ethan’s brought Arthur to life in such rich, delightfully disturbing ways,” they went on before teasing what viewers can expect from Cluemaster. “We hope to surprise fans of the mythos with where our story is going, though we’ll give you a clue …Quiz Bowlairs weeknights in Gotham.” Seeming like a more stage-eager version ofclassic Batman villain The Riddler, Cluemaster is a brilliant but unhinged game show host who flaunts his intelligence (and carries some dark secrets). He also has near-unreachable expectations for his daughter Stephanie, who is the only person capable of potentially reaching his level of intellect.

Meanwhile, Crystal Brown has some secrets of her own. As the wife of a Gotham celebrity, she keeps on a facade of elegance and refinement. However, people close to her know she’s got an ice-cold mean streak, all thanks to a hidden addiction she keeps away from prying eyes. So, theGotham Knightsmight need more than the help of a new Robinto take on these new threats. The show’s rogues' gallery is shaping up to be a hefty one.

Gotham Knightsmay have a lot riding on it, considering it’s coming out so soon after the full demise of The CW’s “Arrowverse” collection of DC shows.Aside fromSuperman and Lois, which offered an unexpected reveal that it’s set in a standalone universe, this could make or break the network’s future with DC. Here’s hoping it’s up for the task.
