It looks like modern game consoles aren’t the only ones who get to join in the fun with Gotham City’s newest ragtag team of heroes. The upcomingGotham Knightsvideo game may have inspired some interest in the property, as a similarly-themed project is now headed to the small screen as well. But that doesn’t mean the 2 are related, because it wouldn’t be a DC series without some good old-fashioned confusion.
The CW is currently working on aGotham Knightsseries of its own, featuring a number of familiar names behind the scenes. Not only will this add yet another DC show to the network’s already robust lineup, but it will also include several writers from thearguably super underratedBatwomanseries. Interestingly enough, this will actually be a completely standalone project. This means that it’s not a spinoff ofBatwomanand has no connection to theGotham Knightsgame, aside from sharing a title.

According to the report from Variety,Gotham Knightswill follow Bruce Wayne’s rebellious adopted son in the time just after Bruce himself has been murdered. But unlike the Bat-family of heroes in the game, including Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and the Red Hood, The CW’s take on the story will feature the younger Wayne teaming up with the children ofBatman’s classic villains. They have all been framed as accomplices in Bruce’s murder, and as the newfound band of misfits fight to clear their names, they slowly become a new symbol of hope for Gotham City.
Gotham Knightswill featureBatwomanwriters Natalie Abrams, James Stoteraux, and Chad Fiveash on its script. But interestingly, while this will take place in its own separate world and story, it will still be produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, which plays the same role behind the scenes of The CW’s other DC shows likeStargirlandLegends of Tomorrow. With other upcoming DC projects on both The CW and HBO Max, likeColin Farrell’s spinoff toThe Batman, it seems this particular side of the comic book world is enjoying a bit of a renaissance.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time this particular writing team has worked on 2 separate takes on similar properties. While Fiveash and Stoteraux are currently working onBatwoman, they also wrote for the separate seriesGotham, which featuredVictoria Cartagena as Detective Renee Montoya. Now, Cartagena stars inBatwoman’s current season as the same character, though the 2 shows don’t share a continuity.
Since the connection betweenBatwomanandGotham Knightsseems to be similar, perhaps viewers can look forward to seeing even more stars reprising their fan-favorite roles in new contexts. The CW seems ready to take creative risks lately, and that might be exactly the fresh mix-up the network needs in its superhero department.
