The flurry of rumors around Nvidia’s upcoming Ampere based GeForce RTX 30 series shows no sign of slowing down - if anything they are getting faster. The latest good news for gamers looking to boost their frame rates, is that the rumored performance benchmarks of the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti are getting faster too. The newest leak suggests that the RTX 3080 will be around 35% faster than the current generation RTX 2080 Ti, which iseven better than the 15-20% increase suggested by past rumors.
The benchmark score was leaked by Twitter user Kopite7kimi, who has also confirmed alleged scores showing the RTX 3090, which is presumed to be launching as theRTX 3080 Ti, will be a staggering 50% faster than the Turing based RTX 2080 Ti. Both tests were carried out using 3D Mark Time Spy Extreme, with the RTX 3090 reaching a score of almost 10,000 points, and the RTX 3080 reaching almost 8,600. For comparison, the RTX 2080 Ti scores almost 6,400 in the same test.

The 50% improvement over like for like cards also looks to apply to the RTX 3080, which the leaker shows to have 50% better performance than the RTX 2080 at 4k resolution, and 40% better performance at 1440p resolution. The leak also provides additional details about the supposed specifications of the RTX 3080, which will apparently havethe same 4352 cores of the RTX 2080 Ti, and utilize 10 GB of GDDR6Xmemory which runs at 19 GB per second. These specs match those of past rumors.
The use of the RTX 3090 product name in the leak, does put some doubt into whether the high-end card’s results will reflect the performance of the RTX 3080 Ti, or whether the RTX 3090 will instead become a more powerful and expensive Titan card. Interestingly, Kopite7kimi has also tweeted that the performance difference appears to be bigger when benchmarked in Time Spy Extreme versus the standard Time Spy test, but the reason why is unknown.
If these results are accurate representations of the performance of Nvidia’s new Ampere RTX 30 series cards, they will likely be causing concern over at AMD, whose upcoming RDNA 2 based Navi 2X series cards are rumored to have a much smaller leap over the current generation RTX 2080 Ti. Of course there remains a big question around pricing. Just because the Nvidia cards are rumored to be more powerful, it does not guarantee they will end up offering the best value for money, plusthe RTX 30 series is rumored to have huge power requirements, while Navi 2X is expected to be more efficient.
For those looking to putperformance above everything elsethough, the leaks continue to suggest that Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30 series will be the way to go. With the rumored release dates for both Nvidia and AMD creeping up, gamers won’t have to wait too long to know how accurate the sea of rumors are.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 is rumored to launch on 17th September, no date has yet been announced.
