Summary

One part ofThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomunexpectedly gave surprising support to the idea of aLegend of Zeldastrategy spin-off. The idea would be a significant jump from whatThe Legend of Zeldahas traditionally done in the past regarding Link’s adventures. However, history has shown that theZeldaseries is not only one of Nintendo’s most reliably high-quality properties, but it is remarkably versatile as well.Tears of the Kingdomhas already brought several experimental ideas to the series, so aLegend of Zeldastrategy title may not be too far-fetched.

There are a lot offascinating ideas forLegend of Zeldaspin-offsthat have yet to be explored. While the series has always followed the adventures of Link, the land of Hyrule keeps showing itself to be an increasingly interesting place. Despite all the interesting characters and locations, it seems like the player only ever gets to pay brief visits on their way to face off with Ganon. This is a major reason why spin-offs can be so useful forThe Legend of Zeldafranchise, as they can give players new perspectives of Hyrule. TheHyrule Warriorsgames did so very well, and another spin-off could do the same.

Tears of the Kingdom’s Gerudo Defense Mission is a Good Argument for a Zelda Strategy Game

There is an interesting mechanic inTotK’s Riju of Gerudo Town questthat deserves mention. In one portion of this quest, Link must work alongside Riju and her Gerudo soldiers to protect Gerudo Town from a siege of Gibdos. During this mission, the player has a chance to help position the squads of guards to best help them protect the town. While Link will still have to do most of the work himself, with backup from Riju’s lighting attacks, the guards do play their role admirably. This dynamic makes for one ofTears of the Kingdom’s more interesting missions.

The troop-organizing mechanic from Riju of Gerudo Town could build toward afutureLegend of Zeldafeaturethat could take place in a spin-off. A more advanced system of working with various troops could offer players plenty of options, from unit types, upgrades, and different tactics to employ. For example, players could mix in Gerudo archers to provide covering fire for their soldiers, or even some elite Gerudo with lightning attacks of their own. Other races of Hyrule could be involved as well, such as Rito, Gorons, and Hylians. Players could build their own makeshift armies and bring the fight to Ganon’s forces across Hyrule in a spin-off.

A strategy-focusedLegend of Zeldaspin-off title could alsolearn something fromAge of Calamityby giving players several hero units to play as. Of course, Link would be present, but other characters like Zelda, Impa, and representatives of Hyrule’s other races. This sort of approach could include perks such as:

With this approach, aLegend of Zeldastrategy game could be as exciting and entertaining as theHyrule Warriorsgames. A strategic spin-off revolving around commanding several units in battle would be anew kind ofLegend of Zeldagame, and one that could provide a fully unique experience. Expanding theLegend of Zeldaseries in a new direction would likely be a wise move for Nintendo, further growing the appeal of one of its flagship franchises. After so many games of Link largely fighting a one-man war against Ganon, having players control a larger force to fight against evil would be an interesting move.Tears of the Kingdommay have provided the perfect link to a strategic spin-off.
