Summary
Towering over battlefields and the heads of players,Immortals of Aveum’s hulking Colossals are undeniably one of the game’s most visually impressive elements. Like nearly everything else players encounter during their time withAscendant Studios’ fantasy FPS, these free-moving monoliths are controlled by Aveum’s powerful magic users, with their impressive offensive abilities making them a valuable weapon in the Everwar. Despite being powered by the same magical forces that flow through Aveum, though, the decidedly mechanical nature of the Colossals makes them stand out against the game’s other arcane artifacts.
Players got their first good look at theColossals inImmortals of Aveumduring the lead-up to the game’s launch. Giving gamers a small taste of the action awaiting them inImmortals of Aveum, Ascendant Studios released a lengthy trailer showing protagonist Jak doing battle with enemy forces atop one of the massive mechanical creations at Summer Games Fest 2023. This brief trailer did a great job of showcasing the scale of the Colossals, but it’s only as players progress throughImmortals of Aveum’s story that they’ll uncover how these walking weapons also provide important insights into Aveum’s past.

Immortals of Aveum’s Colossals Steal the Scene When They’re On-Screen
Ascendant Studios’ has taken the time to create the same sort of rich, imaginative lore for the Colossals as it did for nearly every other element of itsmagic-based FPS, but it’s the massive size of the machines that will stick with most players after they’ve finished the game. First seen as lifeless hulks littering the battlefield inImmortals of Aveum’s third chapter, Yltheum, the Colossals tower over everything around them even in their slumped-over state. With their humanoid shape and building-sized swords, the mechanical marvels look more like something out ofRobotechthan a traditional fantasy game.
While Yltheum provides a visually impressive introduction to the arcane artifacts, it isn’t until players get up close and personal with a Colossal inImmortals of Aveum’s latter half that the true scale of the war machines becomes apparent. During the appropriately named Colossal mission, players are tasked with catching a ride on one of the titular machines to track downImmortals of Aveum’s antagonist Sandrakk. As gamers explore the Colossal’s cavernous interior, eventually engaging in a heated battle in and on the machine, they’ll learn more about who constructed these massive mechanical creations and why they look so drastically different from nearly everything else in the magical world of Aveum.
Colossals Are a Lingering Remnant of Aveum’s Colorful and Chaotic Past
Described by an in-game lore entry as “walking construct-vessels of metal, glass, and stone,” the Colossals were created by Aveum’s powerful Arjimahn civilization. While the Arjimahn made use of magic like the other inhabitants of Aveum, they were also responsible for constructing many of the advanced ancient technologies players will encounter throughout the game. With the knowledge of their creations lost to history by the timeImmortals of Aveum’s storybegins, the mechanical nature of the Colossals and other relics of the Arjimahn stand apart from the traditional fantasy fare found throughout the rest of Aveum.
While the Colossals were once widely feared throughout Aveum, the defeat of the Arjimahn at the hands of the kingdom of Aristeya led to most of the machines being destroyed along with their creators. The few remaining Colossals still in operation during the events ofImmortals of Aveumare now controlled by the sea-peoples of K’ley, who use the ancient machines to travel across deep oceans too formidable for standard sailing ships to navigate. Though now largely relegated to serving as a means of transportation, the Colossals still pose a threat to any who would try to attack them.
Despite only appearing for a small portion of the15-25 hours required to beatImmortals of Aveum, the towering Colossals are sure to leave a big impression on many players. With their striking appearance and ancient origins, they stand tall as one of the more intriguing elements of the game’s fantasy world.
Immortals of Aveumis available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
