In an interview with Collider aboutthe debut ofPeacemaker, Gunn got the chance to go into some detail about his upcoming sequelGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3and one of the new faces viewers will get to enjoy this time around. One new cast member in particular is British-Nigerian actor Chukwudi Iwuji, who looks like he’ll be another of Gunn’s favorite people to use in his projects. “It’s going great,” Gunn said. “Chukwudi, who plays Murn inPeacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I’m really happy.”

Gunn went on to give a hint to audiences about the upcoming movie. “It’s different than what people are going to expect,” he continued. “It’s a hard road, but I’m really happy with it so far.” It looks like that isn’t the only thing he has to be happy about, as the conversation eventually shifted over to theGuardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was announced over a year ago. Naturally, many are curious about the progress of this particularly quirky and ambitious project. Unfortunately, it turns out they haven’t even started shooting yet. But that doesn’t mean fans should get worried just yet.

“It’s still upcoming in the shoot,” Gunn explained. “We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there’s too much Omicron around, so we couldn’t do it. We’re going to have to fit it in. I haven’t started yet. I’m excited to. It’s fun.” It’s kind of sad that “there’s too much Omicron around” is such a mundane thing to say now when it sounds so futuristic and cool out of context. But at least it helps explain thedelay for theGuardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Audiences shouldn’t worry, though. Gunn is one director who’s been pretty reliable in recent years, and he’s shown time and time again that his projects are well worth the wait. So a little longer shouldn’t be a problem. Plus, the idea thatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will be different from what some are expecting is definitely something to get excited about, especially from the guy who madeSylvester Stallone into a big mumbly shark.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is currently set to release in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
