TheJust Causevideo game franchise has always felt like the big-budget Hollywood blockbusters of the past, and it now appears that itself will become one very soon.TheJust Causefilm adaptationhas found itself a director, in the form of Michael Dowse (Stuber, Goon).
Dowse is set to helm the production, which will be a co-production between both Constantine Film and Prime Universe.The film’s script is reportedly penned byJohn Wickcreator Derek Kolstad. The movie’s producers include Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer, Prime Universe Film’s Adrian Askarieh, and Kolstad. Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz and Square Enix will be serving as the executive producers and Constantin’s Alex Westmore and Colin Scully are overseeing the production.

TheJust Causefilm is set to follow the same overall plot as the video games, focusing on Rico Rodriguez on a mission against The Black Hand terrorist organization. The series' name is directly taken from the United States invasion of Panama in 1989, which was code-named “Operation Just Cause.”
Back in 2017, it was announced thatJason Mamoa (Aquaman,Game of Thrones) would play the leading role of Rico Rodriguez. It’s reported that the film will also have a female co-lead, giving the movie aRomancing the Stonevibe to it. It was also previously mentioned that the film would most closely follow the third game’s story.
This is not Constantin Film’s first video game adaptation, with the studio’s previous work including both theResident Evilfranchise andupcomingMonster Hunterfilm, which was set to release this September but just recently got delayed. TheResident Evilfilms were not known for their high quality or faithfulness to its source material, but here’s hoping theJust Causefilm fairs a bit better.With the releases ofPokemon:Detective PikachuandSonic the Hedgehog, video game movies appear to be improving in quality a bit.
TheJust Causeseries first started back in 2006, with the first title releasing on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PC. The series has gone on to sell impressively well, with over 35 million copies being sold worldwide and the most recent titleJust Cause 4winning the 2019 Webby Awards for best action game of the year.
