League of Legendshas been enjoying a successful tenth season so far. But after revealing the release date for its upcoming card game and celebratingApril Fools with Pingu, an adorable joke champion,Riot Games is forced to the bearer of some bad news. DiehardLeaguefans looking for a quarantine distraction will be unable to play due to technical difficulties.
The game’s server problems are not the first to affect quarantined players.Call of Dutyplayers recently reported a large server outagethat left many players unable to connect to the game. In a tweet to its support account, Riot Games announced that it was receiving reports and invited players to check the Service Status page for more information.

The current outage has leftLeagueplayers unable to log in or begin a multiplayer game. According to the Server Status page, ranked queues and match history are also currently unavailable while the developers attempt to restore the servers. The developer did not say what caused these issues, and at the time this article was posted, Riot’s most recent updates concerning the situation were on April 6 at 5:34 pm EDT.
AlthoughLeague of Legends’server issues are disappointing, these problems are not entirely surprising. Earlier entries on the Server Status page warned players that increased Internet usage due to COVID-19 might cause problems in-game, such as packet loss or high latency.
Although Riot did not specifically warn players about servers being unavailable, it did anticipate gameplay being more difficult during this time. However, these warnings have not stopped several players from criticizing Riot for the outage. One player said that they couldn’t understand how a large video game developer could have these issues. Others chimed in, stating that this wasn’t the first time thatLeaguehad similar problems, and that it was ridiculous.
Players do have a valid point. It has been eleven years afterLeague’s release, and Riot should probably have made sure the game could handle increased traffic with minimal issues. However, it is equally important for players to not lash out at the support team, and at the developers who are working with reducedresources due to the coronavirusto fix the solution as soon as possible.
