League of Legendsis one of the most popular live service games in the world. That title means a lot of things, one example being thatLeague of Legendshas a very complicated monetization scheme. The MOBA has several different currencies, some premium and some earned, which each grant access to different rewards. The complicated monetization helpsLeague of Legendsstay successful, but at least in one example – Prestige Points – Riot’s decided to change things up.
The official announcement regarding Riot’s plan to antiquate Prestige Points inLeague of Legendswas made around two months ago.Prestige Pointswould become obsolete, and any remaining points in players' accounts would be erased. It was a warning toLeague of Legendsplayers in preparation for tomorrow, March 24, when Prestige Points are planned to expire. In other words,League of Legendsplayers have less than twenty-four hours to spend their remaining Prestige Points before they’re gone for good.

For those who still have Prestige Points,League of Legendscurrently has a Last Chance Prestige Point Shop open just to get rid of them. The shop includes 15Event skinsand 9 past Prestige Point skins, each available for 100 Prestige Points. There are also plenty of 5-point Event Prestige Icons, as well as a variety of loot bags and currency items.
The planned obsolescence of Prestige Points is part of a bigger process that Riot calls the Mythic Content Overhaul. Phase one of the Mythic Content Overhaul removes Prestige Points from the game and inserts a new currency, Mythic Essence, which will also replace Gemstones. A new Mythic Shop will also replace theGemstone Shopand will feature rotating content, including unvaulted Prestige skins, Mythic thematic skins, seasonal rewards, and other loot boxes and currencies.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Mythic Content Overhaul will expand dramatically on what’s currently available. Prestige skins will be leveled up in quality so that they stand out rather than being a simple gold chroma. New rewards tracks will be unlocked that allow players a new way to earn Masterwork Chests. The big final update will completely reworkLeague of Legends' event passes, consolidating them into single one-track passes with 50 levels apiece with both free and premium rewards.
In the end,League of Legends' monetization is still, unfortunately, overly complicated. The removal of Prestige Points won’t be simplifying much. Still, it’s one less currency to worry about, and that should mean moreLeague of Legendsplayerswill be able to focus on what they want and not how they’re supposed to get it. Hurry and spend those final Prestige Points before they disappear Thursday at 1:00 PM PT.
