Skydance’s upcoming Captain America and Black Panther game is easily one of the most intriguingMarveloutings in a while due to its authentic setting and cast, as well as the fact that there are four playable protagonists. It is anyone’s estimate how any of these characters will play and how different they may be from one another, especially since little to no details have been shared about the game since its initial announcement. Fortunately forCaptain America, though, there are many gaming inspirations that Skydance could draw from.
It is important to note that Skydance’s Marvel game is set during WW2, and therefore Captain America’s playstyle will almost assuredly be less gymnastic or cinematic as it might be when training in the present day. Being trained as a military soldier may mean that he is much more pragmatic, and it would be interesting to see him be inexperienced with his iconic vibranium shield and not have a great handle yet on how to hurl it around at enemies. Regardless,Firaxis’ recentMarvel’s Midnight Sunsmight be an excellent blueprint for Steve Rogers’ potential attributes.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Captain America Makes the Most of a Block Meter
Unsurprisingly,Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Captain Americanegates a ton of damage with skill and heroic cards that reinforce his Block. Many characters are oriented around the Block status and employ it in their own cards, particularly Captain Marvel, and it can be incredibly helpful when amassed between individual characters on the battlefield.
But it makes sense that Captain America would have Block be paramount to histactical gameplay inMarvel’s Midnight Sunsdue to the fact that he carries a nigh-indestructible shield around. In this case, Captain America can be a tank that aggros enemies away from other party members while still dishing out a ton of damage at the same time. Indeed, because Captain America is a leader archetype, he is also well-attuned to rallying the team.
If players have other characters on their team that are more susceptible to taking a hit, Captain America is a perfect teammate to help supplement that party. In Skydance’s Marvel game, because players are guaranteed to be around other infantry soldiers who are panicked or frightened by their circumstances, it would be great to see this iteration of Captain America offer that same sort of support.
Skydance’s Captain America Needs Some Sort of Block or Posture Meter
In what would likely need to be a mechanic unique to him, Skydance’s Captain America should have his own Block meter. This would ensure that he cannot deflect gunfire indefinitely, while still allowing the vibranium shield to repel a great amount of attacks that ordinary armor would be unable to.
It will be interesting to see how gameplay may shift fromplaying as Gabriel Jones to playing as Captain America, for example, but a Block or Posture meter could make him far more unique in that sense. If Captain America relies too heavily on having his shield out in front of him, it would make sense to see him stunned for a brief period if an associable meter were to break.
Because Captain America is known to have wielded firearms in this era, it would also be great to see Captain America defend himself with the shield while firing back at Hydra enemies. If throwing the shield is an ability Captain America has, he would obviously lose his Block meter for a time, and it would be neat to see him take more damage while it is out of his possession, though as a super soldier it would make sense for him to be able to withstand more damage than Gabriel would in Skydance’sMarvelgame.
