After 29 weeks in theaters, Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime film,Suzume no Tajimari,also known asSuzume, finally ended its Japanese theatrical run on May 27th.Suzumemanaged to sell 11.5 million tickets, with an estimated domestic revenue of 14.79 billion yen (approximately US$105.3 million).

Such a massive revenue makesSuzumethe 8th highest-earning anime film in Japanese history. Furthermore, it is also the 14th highest-earning film of all time in Japan. This colossal success also meansSuzumeis Makoto Shinkai’s highest-earning film to date, surpassing the 14.23 billion yen (approximately US$101 million in current conversion) lifetime earning of his last film,Weathering With You.

Suzumealso garneredmassive success in the global market. It is estimated to have grossed over $321.5 million worldwide. Not only that, this Shinkai’s flick also managed to reach the number 1 box office ranking in multiple countries. Most notably, it is the highest earning film in India, South Korea, and also China. Not only that, it actually managed to be the highest-earning Japanese film of all time in both South Korea and China.

Just like every film that he ever made,Suzumeis also written by Makoto Shinkai himself. And similar to his previous works, the story ofSuzumeis alsoadapted into a novel and a manga series. The novel was already released in Japan back in August 2022, while the manga began serialization back in October 2022. The first volume of theSuzumemanga was released in March 2023.

For international fans, Yen Press has announced that they have licensed the novel adaptation ofSuzume.The official English translation will be released in both digital and hardback on Jun 20, 2025. Unfortunately, there is no news about the official English release for the manga yet. However, considering that the manga is published by Kodansha Japan, we can expect its subsidiary, Kodansha USA, to publish the manga for the global market in the near future.

Makoto Shinkai has producedcountless critically-acclaimed and fan favorite anime filmsthroughout the years. And ever since the global success ofYour Nameback in 2016, he has broken countless records with each subsequent work, with the new one becoming more successful than the last.
