Warning: Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.According to a popular fan theory,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has teased that a goblin army will be present in the next entry. While the evidence for this is admittedly a bit of stretch, it would follow a pattern thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2already continued.
In theMarvel’s Spider-Manseries, the major villains tend to bring a faction of regular enemies along with them. The original game saw the Inner Demons gang tagging along withMr. Negative, giving Peter basic foes to fight as he worked toward an encounter with Martin Li. Then, inSpider-Man: Miles Morales, The Tinkerer had their own faction, that being the Underground. Finally, each of the main threats inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2provided their own group of regular enemies, with Kraven’s Hunters and Venom’s Symbiotes providing plenty of enemy variety.
It’s only natural, then, that one of the main villains inMarvel’s Spider-Man 3would attack the city with a large faction of their own. WhileOtto Octaviuscould hypothetically craft an army of tentacle-wielding robots, that seems a bit less likely than Green Goblin corrupting a huge number of civilians with the G-Serum. As it turns out, Insomniac Games may have hinted that this is the route it plans to take, at least if a fun theory from Reddit user Ganzo786 is to be believed. The theory in question is tied to a cutscene near the end of the game where Peter, Miles, and MJ plan out how they will defeat the Symbiotes.
As shown in the image attached to the post, a large Goblin with a bow is present and used to resemble the game’s antagonist. Obviously, this goblin could be a stand-in forGreen Goblin, who fans are expecting to see withinMarvel’s Spider-Man 3. More intriguingly, though, are all the little board game pieces of goblins surrounding the larger one - suggesting that a huge faction of Goblins could accompany Norman Osborn. Basic enemies are a must for games likeMarvel’s Spider-Man, as players cannot battle thugs or escaped prisoners for an entire game, so having some weaker Goblins to clash with could be an ideal approach for Insomniac.
However, as is the case with fan theories, fans should only take this idea with a grain of salt, as there is nothing official that would suggest this is the plan. While Insomniac Games had hidden plenty of clever details in theMarvel’s Spider-Manseries, this foreshadowing would certainly be a bit on the nose, though it is hard not to read into it withthe G-Serumteased at the end of the most recent game. Plus, Insomniac Games has a comic storyline it could pull from with Goblin Nation if it wants inspiration for how to make a group of Goblins work.
Currently, fans have no idea which directionInsomniac Gameswill take with its version of Green Goblin. It could make him a traditional superpowered villain or a monstrous reptile like in the Ultimate comics, as either would fit Insomniac’s universe well.
