Rumors have been swirling for years that Nintendo is planning to bring the olderMetroid Primegames to the Nintendo Switch, with various retail leaks and insiders seemingly confirming the existence of aMetroid Prime TrilogySwitch port. Years have gone by with no official announcement, and now it seems that instead of aMetroid Prime Trilogythat collects all three of the classic games, Nintendo may be releasing aMetroid Primeremaster on its own instead.

This news comes from Emily Rogers, a reputable Nintendo insider who claims to have heard that Nintendo is releasing aMetroid Primeremaster in 2022 to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary. Rogers is unsure if Nintendo is preparing to release theentireMetroid Prime Trilogyor not, but is “leaning toward” just a remaster of the originalMetroid Primegame getting released. Nothing official has been announced by Nintendo at the time of this writing, so all fans can do is speculate for now.

If Nintendo does have aMetroid Primeremaster waiting in the wings, it seems unlikely that it will be announced at the Nintendo Direct even that’s taking place on September 23. While it’s totally within the realm of possibility, it would seem like an odd move for Nintendo to make aMetroid-related announcement just weeks before it launchesMetroid Dread. And since we’re over a year out fromMetroid Prime’s 20th anniversary, it seems even less likely that aMetroid Primeremasterreveal would happen anytime soon.

It should be stressed that Nintendo has not officially confirmed the rumoredMetroid Prime Trilogyor theMetroid Prime 1remaster mentioned by Rogers. As it stands, there are only two officialMetroidgame projects that are for sure in development. One isMetroid Dread, a 2D throwback to the originalMetroidgames that’s set to launch on October 8, and the other is Retro Studios’Metroid Prime 4.

Fans have been waiting quite a long time forMetroid Prime 4, as the game was originally announced in 2017 as a collaboration between Nintendo and Bandai Namco. A couple of years later, Nintendo decided to pull the plug on that version ofMetroid Prime 4,restarting the game’s development at Retro Studios, the developer that made the original trilogy ofMetroid Primegames. Nothing has been seen ofMetroid Prime 4since, and it could still be some time before the game makes its return to the spotlight.
