In its post-launch game mode dubbed Khronicles,Mortal Kombat: Onslaughtwill continuously add new characters with their own stories to the mobile game, and first up on the list isMortal Kombat 1’s version of Scorpion. It’ll be interesting to see how Scorpion’s addition is explained, but there’s a lot between now and then.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaughtis launching with four game modes: the PvP-oriented Arena, the self-explanatory Story Mode, the challenging Boss Towers, and the “for fun” Chasm Mode. Khronicles are something that will come post launch as part ofMKO’s “ambitious live-service plans.” Each Khronicle will add a new character to the game, which will be free for everyone to play through, and this will allow them to decide if they want to permanently unlock the character or not. No timeline was given, butMK1’s Scorpion is up first.

During a recent presentation, lead designer Mike Lee made it clear thatMortal Kombat: Onslaughtis a completely standalone universe (created by Ed Boon) independent ofMK1’s New Era, but it’s clear crossovers are on the table. Lee also explained that this first Khronicle would explain how and why Scorpion has made it to this universe, with future Khronicles also adding otherMortal Kombatcharacters, as well as console or licensed guest characters. In other words, the crossover potential is endless given NRS' knack for guest characters.

It should be noted thatMortal Kombat: Onslaughthas its own version of Scorpion as well, but the two characters will play different. In explaining how kits work, Lee told us that every character has a special move, passive ability, and auto attacks. They are also given a specific star rating, with Lee showing us what a three-star character looks like and mentioning that a five-star variarion of that sameMortal Kombatcharacterwould play differently. There are certainly similarities between each variation, as it’s hard to imagine Scorpion not using his spear in either, but their move set and kit will have stark differences.

Not to mention,Mortal Kombat: Onslaughthas special Relics that can power up characters, granting them new abilities and/or fatalities, while Base Gear can obviously be changed as well. It’s a collectible squad-based RPG after all, not a typicalMortal Kombatfighting game, so it also makes sense to want to collect the various iterations of characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, and so forth. As fans dive in on October 17, it’ll be nice to see how the early game is received and what comes next for the mobile title, especially who comes after Scorpion.
