Marvel Studio’s latestBlack Widowtrailer has dropped and it will give fans all the feels. In addition to showing new visuals of the titular character in action, the trailer also shows fragments of her journey throughout her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While they are brief, the nostalgic inclusions serve as a fitting tribute to her venerable legacy.
Perhaps the most impactful past scene that was included in the trailer was the one fromAvenger’s Endgamewhen Scarlett Johannson’s Natasha Romanoffsacrificed herself at Vormirand Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye looked on with no way to help her. It was one of the saddest moments in the film and in the entirety of the MCU altogether, especially because fans had been following Romanoff for over a decade; ever since she was first introduced inIron Man 2.

The inclusion of her death scene served as an agonizing reminder that Black Widow—at least, Johansson’s version—is definitively dead and will remain that way. According tothe rules of Vormir and the internal time travel logicthat was established inInfinity WarandEndgame, there is no chance for the Romanoff to come back to life. Even Johansson herself confirmed that Black Widow was dead for good, telling Jimmy Fallon onThe Tonight Showthat the plotline “brought a closure” to her that she needed. “There are very few certain things but definitely, [Black Widow’s] death is pretty certain,” she added.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped fans from theorizing ways that she could be brought back to life in the MCU. The most popular theory comes from a Reddit user who pointed out thatBlack Widow was killed and resurrected in the comic booksonce before. In theSecret Empireevent series, Natasha Romanoff was killed by an evil Captain America when she tried to stop him from killing Spider-Man. She eventually returned to the story as a clone of herself, created from the Black Widow Ops Program that was run out of the Red Room.
While the Red Room will be featured in the upcoming film, it’s unlikely that the clone storyline will come into play to set up future stories for Natasha Romanoff. Besides, with Scarlett Johansson’s Marvel contract expected to end with theBlack Widowsolo film, the most likely scenario would bea passing of the torchto a new Black Widow—that is, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.
Black Widowwill debut on Disney+ and participating theaters on July 9.
