They both come at the Halloween mood from different directions, asLayers of Fear 2is first-person psychological horror, andCostume Quest 2is a cartoony kids' adventure game.

One of the most interesting parts of Halloween is how broad the spectrum of spookiness versus spine-chilling horror can be, and discountedHalloween-themed video gamesare common at this time of year. Layers of Fear 2features the player as an actor who’s commanded by a mysterious voice to act in a film on a ship in the middle of the sea; thalassophobia, the fear of the sea, is a common fear that horror games love to play with. It’s very atmospheric and focused on exploration and storytelling, and has been called one of the besthorror games closest to a haunted house experience.
Costume Quest 2, on the other hand, could be enjoyable for older players but is mostly aimed at kids, as is clear from its bright visuals and focus on children as the main characters. The game explores a dystopian world where Halloween and candy are both against the law, but the tone is very light as players take on the roles of Hallo-warriors, or kids who put on different costumes to give them the power to fight monsters.
