Nier: Automata’s fifth anniversary is fast approaching and anyone hoping that publisher Square Enix and/ordirector Yoko Tarowould have something to say about it is going to be quite happy. The game’s official Twitter account has not only acknowledged the anniversary but has also announced a special livestream for the occasion.
It appears to be Japanese only unfortunately, with it airing via Nico Nico, but diehard fans will no doubt want to check it out regardless, or at least pay attention to what could possibly be shown during it. The announcement hasn’t provided any specifics, but it is teasing that new information could be shown. It’s also unclear if it will be specifically related toNier: Automataor even theNierseries as a whole.

The stream will be held on Wednesday, February 23rd - the same dayNier: Automatareleased in Japan back in 2017 (the West didn’t get it until the following March) - and starts at 6pm. Since this is presumably Japanese time, it means the stream won’t air for Westerners until 1am PST / 4am EST / 9am GMT.
As for what could be shown during the stream, the obvious hope is that a sequel toNier: Automatawill be announced. Yoko Taro has said thattheNierseries is finishedunless he’s given more money for it, but his reputation and eccentric nature mean his claim shouldn’t be taken seriously. BothNier: AutomataandNier: Replicantwere financial successes, with the former pushing more than 6 million copies as of last July, which practically guarantees a bright future for the series.
However, it has been rumored that ananime adaptation ofNier: Automatais in production. Said rumor only popped up a few days ago as well, which could mean that it will be announced during the livestream. It’s certainly an interesting possibility although considering how much of its story takes advantage of the video game medium, there is a certain risk translating it into an anime series.
Even if there is no newNiergame, Yoko Taro has been keeping himself and fans busy with his newVoice of CardsRPG. Sporting a tabletop gaming inspired presentation and gameplay wholly dictated by cards, it released last October and received generally favorable reviews. A second game titledVoice of Cards: The Forsaken Maidenis already scheduled to release later this month and will feature an entirely different cast of characters, although don’t be surprised if it has some connections to the first game.
Nier: Automatais available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
