Fans know quite a bit about the incredible navigator of the Straw Hat Crew and it is thanks to her that they have survived the treacherous seas of the Grand Line. Much like the vast majority of the crew,Nami has had her past exploredin the previous arcs, however, there is still something that Oda is keeping hidden from the fans.
Nami Past As Fans Know It
Nami was introduced to the fans during the Orange Town Arc.Immediately, fans could tell that she absolutely despised pirates and that her past had something to do with them. Despite everything, Nami teamed up with Luffy temporarily, in an attempt to get to what she wanted and later make her own way. Little did she know that she would end up falling in love with the crew and truly enjoy her time on the seas as a pirate. In the Baratie arc, Nami ended up taking the Going Merry for herself and robbing the Straw Hat Pirates, all in an attempt to gather enough money to pay Arlong, the tyrant pirate who held a very solid grip over the Conomi Islands.
In the Arlong Park arc, Nami’s past was explored in great detail and fans finally found out why she had abandoned the crew the way she did. Essentially, Nami’s entire village was enslaved by Arlong and to stay alive, they had to pay a certain tribute to him. Nami herself was taken in by the Fishman because of her extraordinary talent at drawing sea charts. Eventually, she ended up making a deal with him and she had to pay him 100 million berries so he would relinquish control over her village.
For this reason, Nami spent the vast majority of her childhood robbing pirates and collecting gold. This is also where the moniker of Cat Burglar stems from. In the end, it was Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates who took it upon themselves to beat Arlong and his group to a pulp, freeing Nami’s village in the process. Following the fall of Arlong Park, Nami officially joined the Straw Hat Pirates with the goal of drawing a chart of the entire ocean.
Oda’s Initial Plan For Strong World
While fans got a proper backstory for Nami during her arc, her origins were never properly explored. Fans do not know who Nami’s real parents are or where she came from in the first place. All fans know is that Nami was found by Nojiko when they were both kids and then the two were found by Bellemere, who took them in and eventually took care of them. Why exactly Nami was abandoned and who her real parents were are questions that fans have not found answers to, to this day.

Oda has not hinted at it much or revealed any bits of information concerning Nami’s birth, however, fans know that there is a chance that something might be revealed in the future of the story. For instance, Sanji had an entire arc concerning his true past in Whole Cake Island. Of course, Sanji’s case is special and that doesn’t necessarily mean that Nami will get a backstory as well, however, there was one particular event where Oda wrote a story concerning her birth.
In 2016, Oda mentioned that when he was working on the film Strong World, he drew up the initial plot of the movie and the goal was to dig deeper into the secrets of Nami’s birth. The staff of the movie were utterly shocked at reading the content that Oda presented them with. In fact, it was believed to be way too emotional and touching, and this meant that Oda had to revise his initial plot so that it remained exciting for a younger audience, who would enjoy things such as action a bit more. Ultimately, nothing about Nami’s birth was revealed in Strong World, however, the fact that Oda had already written a story concerning it means that there is a chance for it to make its way later on in the series.
One Piece In The Final Saga
Currently,One Pieceis in its Final Saga. This means that fans will finally get all the major questions that they have answered. For instance, Oda has already mentioned that the main goal of the Final Saga is to dive deeper into the past. Of course, this doesn’t concern Nami specifically and Ods meant that this saga will talk about the events of the Void Century, however, at the same time, fans know quite a lot can be revealed during this time. Fans also know that Oda will have time to draw certain backstories during this time as well. For instance, Luffy is going to meet up with Dragon and potentially even his mom in the final saga. Oda has already confirmed that both his parents are alive and, if that is the case, there is no reason for Luffy to not meet them. A story concerning Luffy’s birth is something that Oda has been wanting to draw for quite a long time, as he has mentioned himself.
Once again, this means that the Final Saga will have some interesting backstories and details regarding the past of not just the world but also some characters. Of course, there is no guarantee that either character will have their past explored. For one, Oda concluded Zoro’s backstory in an SBS, which, funnily enough, enraged quite a lot of the fans. However, it must be remembered that Zoro’s past did not add anything to the story or his character. As such, Oda did not deem it necessary to be included in the story. If Nami’s past is important to the story and serves some great purpose, then fans can rest assured that it will make its way into the Final Saga of the series.
Will Nami’s Past Be Elaborated Upon?
There are quite a lot of mysteries concerning Nami’s past and, in some ways,Nami is a magical character herself. While she is often perceived as a human, Nami has powers that no other Straw Hat has. Her ability to understand the weather is incredibly impressive. In fact, this ability has previously been compared to a supernatural gift. During the Alabasta Saga, Nami showed the ability to predict weather changes in the Grand Line despite not being accustomed to the sea at all. This utterly shocked Vivi, as the weather in the Grand Line is erratic and cannot be predicted. However, Nami, using her supernatural senses, was able to do that easily. Vivi compared Nami to a supernatural being and that, perhaps, could have been a hint at Nami having special importance.
Furthermore, abandoned babies inOne Pieceoften have great significance. For instance, fans know that Shanks was abandonedby the Figarland Familyand ended up being taken in by Roger. Similarly, Shanks found Uta and she ended up playing a massive role in Film Red. There is sure to be a great story about Buggy as well.
The fact is, Oda has already conceived a story about Nami’s birth that is shocking to even those working onOne Piece. If he has gone to those lengths, fans can hope that the story will make it to the Final Saga and shed more light on the incredible navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates.
