Overwatch 2, like any live service game, uses limited time events as a way to attract players to the free-to-play title. The hero shooter has attempted to keep long-running events like Halloween Terror fresh via some genuinely great content like Trials of Sanctuary and Wrath of the Bride, while Winston’s Volleyball shook up Summer Games 2023. With the firstOverwatch 2event passintroduced as part of Winter Wonderland, it is clear that Blizzard has several ideas for how to shake up this form of content, and it could do the same next year during one specific period of time.
Overwatch 2has revealed several of its upcoming season themes already, with a Mirror Universe, Eldritch Horror, and Egyptian Mythology highlighted by Blizzard. While the Mirror Universe theme could come at any point throughout 2024, and Eldritch Horror will be perfect for Halloween next year, Egyptian Mythology feels like a good fit for Season 9 and the start of 2024. Though this is purely speculation, such an approach would place it right around the period of time that Battle for Olympus once occupied, allowing for the Greek-themed event to be replaced with an Egyptian-focused Battle for Anubis.
Battle For Anubis Feels Like a Perfect Fit For Overwatch 2
A Battle For Anubis Mode Could Recapture The Magic of Battle For Olympus
Overwatch 2’s Battle for Olympus event brought a standout free-for-all experience for players to enjoy, which was a big change given how rarely that type of gameplay was seen inOverwatchbeforehand. Aside from things like Deathmatch and Lunar New Year’s Bounty Hunt mode,Overwatch 2modesfocus on team play, so the free-for-all style of gameplay provided by Battle for Olympus felt inherently different. However, what made the mode truly shine was the unique abilities associated with each playable “god.”
Overwatch 2’s Season 2 battle pass offered skins based on Greek Mythology, and these outfits were used to make heroes into actual gods withinBattle for Olympus. Not only did Widowmaker look like Medusa, but she was given the ability to freeze enemies while staring at them, while Zeus Junker Queen actually summoned lightning with her abilities. SinceOverwatch 2will be getting an Egyptian-themed battle pass, it only makes sense to reuse that pass’s skins for a new take on Battle for Olympus. EachOverwatch 2hero that gets an Egyptian mythology outfit could be added to the mode and given unique abilities based on whatever role their god, goddess, or creature had in historical texts. This way, instead of just reusing Battle for Olympus, a similar event with entirely new hero abilities could be introduced to prevent the game from feeling stale.
Overwatch 2already has a few Egyptian skinsthat can be used to add characters to a Battle for Olympus alternative. Ra Zenyatta, Bastet Ana, and Anubis Pharah all come to mind as possible options before even considering the upcoming mythology skins.
Battle For Anubis Could Have Its Own Ilios-Style Reward
As the proposed name suggests, just like Ilios was meant to represent Olympus, a special setting is needed for this event mode. Fortunately, Blizzard already has one that could work with Temple of Anubis, an old 2CP map that has been relegated toOverwatch 2’s arcade. This sandy setting and its old-looking buildings would be perfect for this brawl, especially because the map features two statues near the attacker entrance that could be replaced after the event. Just like the Ilios statue was swapped forZeus Junker Queenafter the hero “won” the Battle for Olympus due to players getting more victories with her than any other character, statues based on the winner of the Egyptian version of the event could replace the ones normally seen on Temple of Anubis. While they would be seen a lot less often, unless the Abubis map is repurposed forOverwatch 2’s Clash mode, it would still be fun to see this community-focused gimmick return.
