According to a translation of the original head writer of thePokemonanime’s blog posts, the plot he had envisioned for the fourth movie would have literally been the end of the franchise. Since thePokemonseries’ goal is to continue forever, this story could never be written.
Recent translations by aPokemonhistorian named Dr. Lava has shown that Takeshi Shudo, thePokemonanime’s original head writer, had different intentions with the anime than where it has ended up today. Aspects of the show likeAsh’s perpetual age of 10worried him, but he passed away in 2010 before he could change the direction of the franchise. In Ash’s journey through the many regions, this idea would have made fans question everything they thought they understood about the wonderful world ofPokemon.

In Shudo’s blog post, he revealed the only idea forPokemon’sfourth movie that he could imagine. He wrote that, had he designed the script, the fourth movie would have been centered around aPokemonuprising in which capturedPokemonwould rebel against their trainers in a Spartacus-style revolution.Pokemonwould realize that humans are using them as if they were slaves, which would start this uprising.
On top of this, Shudo wrote that there would be a role reversal in the story he imagined. Pikachu would be thePokemonleading this rebellion and would end up battling it out withAsh Ketchumby the end of the movie. Team Rocket, who are in possession of many sinisterPokemonsuch as Meowth who has the ability to translatePokemon’smessages into human speech, would be ones who attempt to mediate this conflict. However, due to translation errors on their part, they would only succeed in escalating the war. Shudo concluded that this storyline could only be written as a finale to the series, and since the franchise’s goal is to continue indefinitely, he knew thisPokemonmoviewould likely never be created for the screen.
While thisdark take on thePokemonfranchisealigns with what fans have seen in the early movies, they can only imagine what this would have looked like. Many recent revelations from new translations of Shudo’s blog posts reveal grittier takes on the anime that may have prevented issues that the series is facing today. In spite of these concerns with the franchise, fans are still glad that the series continues the story of Ash Ketchum and his quest to catch them all.
