Niantic has officially debuted a PokeStop Showcase feature inPokemon GO. It’s a feature thathas been tested inPokemon GOfor some timeand will change the way players approach PokeStops in the future.

Many players have been asking for some changes toPokemon GOfor some time now. It’s unlikely that many had contests taking place at various PokeStops in mind, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an unwelcome addition to the game. The feature has been in the works for some time and discussed throughout the community as it worked towards a worldwide rollout, and now that rollout is finally here.

The PokeStop Showcase feature is live everywhere, coinciding with the7th anniversary ofPokemon GO’s launch. A PokeStop Showcase will appear at various PokeStops during select periods. During that time, the PokeStop will ask for a specific Pokemon fitting into a specific category, for example, the debut Showcase running forPokemon GO’s 7th anniversary is one to find the largest Squirtle. Whichever players enter the largest Squirtles into the PokeStop before the Showcase ends get rewards. Niantic says that the top three players can get rewards such as, “An Incubator, a Star Piece, and more.”

At the moment, the only PokeStop Showcase running is the one for the largest Squirtle. The exact spawn rates and the likelihood that one of these Showcases will show up near a particular player is unknown as of right now, but there will likely be at least one running in any given major city. The event is running for the entirety of thePokemon GO7th anniversary celebration, which begins today and ends on July 12th. Niantic recently laid off a lot of its staff andceased production on multiple games to focus more onPokemon GO, and this is one of the first major additions to the game that’s come in the wake of that.

Players are certainly welcoming any kind of addition toPokemon GOat the moment, given the recent controversial nature of the popular mobile game due to a perceived lack of quality-of-life updates. Additionally, players were particularly angered by the removal of a recent update increasingPokemon GO’s spawn distance radius, something that was well-received by the community before being unceremoniously pulled within 48 hours of going live. Niantic is not particularly popular withPokemon GOfans at the moment, evidenced by the PokeStop Showcase announcement getting negative comments on social media. The negative comments are less about this update being a bad one, and more about itnot being thePokemon GOupdate players are looking for. Hopefully, they get those updates in the future.

Pokemon GOis available on mobile now.
