Nintendo and Game Freak continue to unveil new details aboutPokemon Scarlet and Violet, causing manyPokemonfans to speculate more on teasers included in the brief trailers released so far. In celebration of the upcoming generation ofPokemon, onePokemon Scarlet and Violetfan has remade the starters in thePokemon Gold and Silvergraphic style.
Reddit user The_Internet_Goblin recently posted a piece of fan art that includesSprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly from the unreleasedPokemon Scarlet and Violet. The three starter Pokemon were confirmed months ago in thePokemon Scarlet and Violetreveal trailer, with Sprigatito as the new generation’s Grass-type, Fuecoco as the Fire-type, and Quaxly as the Water-type. While otherPokemonfans have imagined this trio in many other ways, The_Internet_Goblin creates individual frames for each of them in the Generation 2 graphics.

Retaining their unique Generation 9 aesthetics, The_Internet_Goblin’s interpretation of Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly asPokemonGen 2sprites effectively captures the pixelated visuals and limited color pallet of the Game Boy Color. EachPokemon Scarlet and Violetstarter made into Gen 2 sprites features one color in various shades beyond the black and white that outline and detail things like Sprigatito’s whiskers, Quaxly’s cap, and the apple-like tufts on Fuecoco’s head. This limited Gen 2 color pallet ensures that the Pokemon are still recognizable despite conveying the yellow patch on Fuecoco’s chest, the distinct pattern on Sprigatito’s face, and the depth of Quaxly’s beak less effectively.
ThePokemonsprites in The_Internet_Goblin’s fan art are striking the same poses as theirPokemon Scarlet and Violetcounterparts. Quaxly throws one wing to the side with another one resting on its side, Fuecoco raises its stubby arms as far as it can, and Sprigatito flashes a pleasant smile. AsPokemonfans might expect when observing the Pokemon inside a Poke Ball, the frames surrounding Fuecoco, Sprigatito, and Quaxly in The_Internet_Goblin’s fan art have colors that reflect their typing. The_Internet_Goblin’s fan art highlights the graphical progress thatPokemongames have made in each iteration from the original release in 1996.
Over five thousandPokemonfans have expressed their enthusiasm with The_Internet_Goblin’sPokemon Scarlet and Violetfan art since it was posted, with some lamenting the lack ofPokemondemakes. AnotherPokemonplayer noted that the design of Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly is impressive with how well the existing 3D models work as 2D sprites in the Game Boy Color aesthetics. While somePokemonfans have asked The_Internet_Goblin if they would give thePokemon Scarlet and VioletLegendariesthe same Gen 2 treatment, the artist has instead done Pawmi, Smoli, and Lechonk.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetrelease for Nintendo Switch on November 18.
