Countless fans ofPokemon Scarlet and Violetpursue optional challenges to make the games harder, and one fan manages to get the perfect start to their Nuzlocke run by encountering a shiny in one of the very first areas of the game. The Nuzlocke challenge provides one of the most broadly-known ways of modifying playthroughs ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, with the challenge forcing players to limit their catches while also presenting the risk of permadeath for their Pokemon.
The existence of theNuzlocke challengehas persisted since some of the earliestPokemongames in the franchise and has been attempted by countless fans across each and every core-seriesPokemongame over the years. The original concept for the challenge posed only two simple rules: only the first wild Pokemon encountered in each area may be caught without exception, and a Pokemon fainting is treated as its permanent death. Fainted Pokemon may not be resurrected through any means and must be released by the player. Fans have since remixed the Nuzlocke challenge by throwing in plenty of optional difficulties and challenges, such as the condition of a lost battle resulting in a complete game over.

Each and every Nuzlocke run is quite unique, and while the challenge adds a substantial amount of extra difficulty and punishment to the games, chance encounters with shiny Pokemon are always sure to spice things up even further. This was exactly the case for a very lucky player known as Firedarkness1101 on Reddit, who posted a clip on the site showing their encounter with a shiny Tarountula shortly after beginning their Nuzlocke playthrough ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet. This rare Pokemon was encountered along Poco Path, one of the very first areas in the game and the location where players are firstable to catch wild Pokemon.
Shiny Pokemon themselves have grown to become a key part of the franchise since they were introduced in the Gen 2 titles, and shiny hunting seems to be a more popular activity inPokemon Scarlet and Violetthan ever before. These incredibly rare Pokemon are differentiated by nothing other than their color, with a Pokemon’s shiny variant featuring a body color different from that of the rest of the species. With a base spawn chance of 1 in 4096, it’s no wonder that these rare Pokemon variants are often hard to find, thoughScarlet and Violetdo introduce strategies that boost the oddsof encountering a shiny.
Thoughthe many shortcomings ofPokemon Scarlet and Violetmight not make them the most popular games in the franchise to play through, the Gen 9 titles still have some content left to offer.Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’sHidden Treasure of Area ZeroDLC is set to release in the form of two different expansions, and while they’re still a little way away from release, they promise to introduce a bunch of content in the forms of new Pokemon, campaign content, and more.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare available on Nintendo Switch.
