It looks as though Nvidia has placed an Easter egg in the recently released RTX version ofPortal, as someone has spotted a 4090 graphics card in the game, which is a GPU that represents the first in a long line of Ada Lovelace products from team green. WhenNvidia launched the RTX 4090in October, it was lambasted by many people not only for its price, but for its physical enormity as well. On the plus side, it is currently the most powerful GPU on the market, intended for enthusiast PC gamers.
As for the game,Portal RTXcame out on December 8and was developed by Nvidia Lightspeed Studios as a visual upgrade of the 2007 Valve puzzle title. Powered by Nvidia’s ray tracing technology, an algorithm that implements realistic lighting and shadow effects, the 15-year-old game only looks a lot more modern, though it never really looked bad despite its age. However, this has come with a drawback, as players now need more recent hardware to run it decently, with an RTX 3080 being recommended and an RTX 4080 ideal for ultra performance settings.

Recently, Reddit user mythicexplore noted thatPortalRTXhas a reference to the beastly 4090 graphics card, uploading an image which shows the GPU in all its detailed glory. It appears as though the hardware was found in a secret area of the game, possibly one of Rattman’s hideouts. It also looks as though this isn’t the only Nvidia card in the game, as other users have mentioned that there is one at the start, and mythicexplore themselves has said they missed one in the end credits too. In updating the game’s visuals, it seems that Nvidia was keen to promote one of its most recent launches.
Nvidia’s RTX tech is used in all sorts of modern games, fromFar Cry 6toDoom EternaltoResident Evil Village, and many more AAA releases. However, it’s also been used in some games that some people wouldn’t think use ray tracing, such asMinecraft. It’s also been implemented in much older titles, includingQuake 2. RTX is often added to games after the fact, and over the past few years, it’s basically become the industry standard in gaming.
Sadly, theredoesn’t seem to be aPortal 3on the horizon. With the success of the original and the 2011 follow-up, fans have been hoping Valve would want to continue its critically acclaimed puzzle series. However, considering the developer is still not in the process of makingHalf-Life 3, as far as anyone knows, it’s not surprising there isn’t a thirdPortalgame.
