TheResident Evilseries has been on a roll lately. The successfulResident Evil 7was followed quickly by the one-two punch of theResident Evil 2and3remakes. It’s no surprise thatResident Evil 8: Villagehas playershunting for details in its debut trailer.

Resident Evil 8: Villageis the next canonical entry in the series, something much less frequent than the recent remakes. Not a lot is known save that series mainstay Chris Redfield will make an appearance and it is a sequel toRE7. There were new monsters and old symbols (like Umbrella’s logo) on display, but not many concrete details.

Some details have come to light after the trailer, although many are through leaks. Besides leaks, manyofficial details have come from an interview withResident Evil 8’s producers, translated by fan Alex Aniel on Twitter. Aside from revelations about inventory management, they revealed what the PS5 and Xbox Series X contribute to the game. Next-gen features ofResident Evil 8include upgraded graphics and sound as well as imperceptible load times.

The graphics updates are to be expected, as they always are with improved hardware. In fact, an insider has claimed thatResident Evil 8’s graphicsare too advanced for the current gen. According to the same interview, the game has apparently been planned and created over 3 and 1/2 years. Presumably, this means that graphical and sound decisions were being made before the PS5 and Xbox Series X were announced, at least publicly.

As for load times, imperceptible is an interesting word, especially when it comes to theResident Evilseries. There will presumably still be load times, although the tweet seems to imply they will be so fast as to not be noticed. The burning question aboutRE 8here is whether that will actually be the case. There are, after all, other ways to make load times imperceptible. The originalResident Evilcovered its load times with animations of doors or ladders to show the transition to a new room. In fact, covering a load time with a short animation is common nowadays.

Other questions about the game still remain, mostly surrounding the story. How it ties in with previous titles, particularly withResident Evil 7, is something fans really want to know. WhetherRE 8brings back the original Umbrellaor goes in a totally different direction, there’s a good chance it will look pretty doing it.

Resident Evil 8: Villageis in development for the PS5, Xbox Series X and PC, due for release in 2021.
