River City Girls 2is the upcoming sequel to the beat ‘em up RPG from Wayforward that is being published by Arc System Works. This game is slated as a directsequel to the firstRiver City Girlsgamethat was released in 2019. This new entry in theKunio-kunfranchise follows the adventures of previous playable characters, Misako, Kyoko, Kunio, and Riki, along with two new playable characters, Marian and Provie. After the events of the firstRiver City Girls, these six are thrown into a new adventure, where they must face an old foe that has resurfaced.

River City Girls 2is looking to improve on the first gamein quite a few ways, such as a bunch of new moves and weapons, along with being able to recruit enemies to help and fight. There’s even a day-night cycle, new terrain and hazards, along with a bunch of new story interactions depending on the playable character that has been selected. While this game was first slated for this summer, the game’s release date has been hit with a delay.

This update was posted onWayForward’s official Twitter page, giving fans a heads-up on the delay. While it was originally scheduled to release in late summer 2022, the new release window is announced to ensure a quality experience for fans. The release window hasn’t been specified in this tweet, but it’s likely to see a release in 2023 instead. Not to leave fans high and dry, the game’s official cover art was revealed as well.

The cover art shows all sixplayable characters ofRiver City Girls 2getting ready to battle, with Misako wielding a pink brass knuckle, while Kyoko uses a baseball bat. Both of their boyfriends, Kunio and Riki, are on the bottom, with the newcomers Marian and Provie on the left and right. Provie is a character from an older entry in the franchise,River City Ransom: Underground, while Marian is the main heroine of theDouble Dragonseries, which itself was derived from theKunio-kunseries.

As for the game’s physical release, it is being provided by Limited Run Games. According to WayForward, these physical versions are on the way, but the supplier hasn’t announced the preorder window yet. As for other games from WayForward that are being released this summer,Spidersaurswas recently released for all major platforms. It is a 2D run-‘n’-gun action game, where players are fighting through swarms of dinosaur-spider hybrids, being another local co-op action game from the indie developer.

River City Girls 2is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
