There’s been some recent buzz about theScott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Gameand its potential for return, with fans of the game and the Ubisoft official Twitter voicing their opinions on bringing back the cult classic beat ‘em up. Now even the franchise’s creator, cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley, is taking to Twitter in support of relisting the game.
AfterScott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Gamewas delisted in 2014, fans haven’t been able to buy the game and enjoy itswell-crafted pixel art, chiptune soundtrack, or fun combat system. The game is a tie-in to O’Malley’s graphic novel series and the 2010 film, which were both cult classics in their own right and have dedicated fandoms. Earlier this year, the first spark of hope for the game’s return came in the form of Ubisoft cryptically responding to a tweet from O’Malley asking for the game to return with a “thinking face emoji.”

O’Malley is getting more explicit now with his support for the game’s return with a three-part tweet thread about his thoughts on the matter. According to his tweets, O’Malley has been saying “for years now” that he and the rest of theScott Pilgrim vs. the Worldfandomwould be very surprised to see Ubisoft actually bring the game back. He says that he’s been working with people for a long time now to release what he thinks could be a really cool physical edition, but they haven’t heard anything from Ubisoft.
The film just had its tenth anniversary, and the creators celebrated with acharity table read by theScott Pilgrimcastthat has renewed interest in every aspect of the franchise, including the unavailable game.Scott Pilgrimbecame a trending topic on social media as tons of fans took to Twitter to ask Ubisoft to give people a way to download and play the game. There’s some concern over the expired license, but with the series’ creator onboard and Ubisoft at least considering it, there must be something that can be done.
According to O’Malley, no one at Ubisoft has contacted him, Tribute Games (the dev company), or Anamanaguchi (the game’s composer). He adds that if theScott Pilgrimgame does get rereleased, it would make sense for the original creators to be kept in the loop and be involved in the process in some way.Scott Pilgrim’sconcept artist, Jonathan Kim, would logically also be involved in a rerelease, but Ubisoft apparently hasn’t talked to him either.
O’Malley sounds really passionate about reviving the game, and a rerelease could have a huge impact on the games industry as a whole byreviving the beat ‘em up genre. Capitalizing on the renewedScott Pilgrimhype with a rerelease could be a great move for Ubisoft.
