Nexon’sThe First Descendantputs players in the boots of a superhuman fighter in a war against an alien species. While this setting may not exactly be unique, the game itself blends a number of elements from other similar titles to create an interesting take on the co-op looter shooter genre.

In a fashion similar toother looter shooters,The First Descendantalso gives players the chance to pick a character they want to start with. Picking who to start with can be a tough decision to make, so here’s an overview of each character to help you figure out who to use first.

Playstyle

Groups and demolishes enemies with grenades

Lepic is the usualsoldier-type characterwho places a heavy emphasis ongunplay and grenades, and he’s one of the first playable units to be revealed backwhenThe First Descendantwas announced. He has thehighest multi-target damage potentialout of the three starting characters, and he’s a great pick for players who want to stick to mid-long-ranged engagements.

Viessa in her character trailer for The First Descendant

This character is a good all-rounder with solid damage and the ability to lump enemies together via his Traction Grenade skill. If you’re looking for a jack of all trades with high-potential DPS against chunky targets, Lepic is your man.

Freezes enemies

A still from Ajax’s character trailer for The First Descendant

Viessa’s main job is toturn enemies into blocks of ice. Not only does this nullify threats for a short duration, but it also makes landing weakspots against them much easier. Don’t be fooled by her role as a Debuffer — Viessa is more than capable of dishing out damage, especially once her targets are already frozen.

Players who enjoy caster-type characters can get a lot of value out of Viessa’s kit. She’sdesigned for offensive ability usage, and if you’re looking to make statues out of your targets before shattering them into pieces, then Viessa is the perfect choice.

Ajax in his character trailer for The First Descendant

Places barriers; Stuns and knocks back enemies

Ajax is the tank of the starter trio, and he’s practically made for fans of the big, lumbering juggernaut archetype. He may not have the same firepower as some otherThe First Descendantcharacters like Bunny, but he’s got the utility and crowd control to keep his team and important objectives alive under the most dire of situations.

This character drawsplenty of similarities to the Titan class in theDestinyfranchise, and if you’re looking to control the battlefield by stunning enemies and completely rendering incoming projectiles useless, Ajax has your back.

Who Should You Pick First?

The power levels of each character are more or less the same when it comes to clearingall content inThe First Descendant. However,we highly recommend picking Ajaxas your first character simply because he’s the mostsolo-player-friendly option.

There are some mission objectives that will require you to defend them. Ajax’s barriers almost trivialize these encounters by completely negating incoming damage. Additionally, he’s very easy to build around as he’s not as ability-reliant as other Descendants. Ajax’s kit will make your life easier if you’re playing alone, especially once you start farming for the other Descendants.
