With the next-generation of video game consoles set to launch in about a year’s time, much attention is being given to the PlayStation 5 and its controller. However, that doesn’t mean Sony is done innovating when it comes to thePS4. In fact, Sony has announced a brand new peripheral for the DualShock 4 that adds a couple of new buttons to the controller, which will be available on January 23 for $19.99.
The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is compatible with any wirelessDualShock 4 controller. It snaps into the bottom of the controller, giving players access to two new programmable buttons on the back. These buttons can be programmed to perform up to 16 different functions. For example, players could choose to program one button to function as the left trigger and the other to function as the right trigger, giving them a lot more options when it comes to game controls than without the Back Button Attachment.

The buttons players have assigned will be displayed on an OLED screen, which also shows which profile is selected. Players will be able to have three profiles prepared for the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment, allowing them to swap between their favorite configurations with little hassle.
In the meantime, one has to wonder if this new DualShock 4 peripheral may offer a clue as to a new feature that could be coming with the PlayStation 5 controller. Sony has yet to reveal the PS5 controller, butpatents have suggested that it will be basically the same as the DualShock 4. Even so, releasing this controller peripheral so late in the PS4’s life seems like a strange move if Sony doesn’t have plans for it in the future.
Maybe thePS5 controllerwill have this technology built in, and Sony is testing the waters with the DualShock 4 Back Button attachment. Alternatively, if the PS5 controller is as similar to the DualShock 4 as many expect, maybe this peripheral will be compatible with it as well.
Without more concrete information on the PS5 controller, it’s hard to say either way. Luckily, with thePS5 consoleaiming for a holiday 2020 release, we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to find out more about its controller. Rumors point to a PS5 reveal event in February, but whether or not that actually comes to pass remains to be seen.
The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment will be available on January 23 for $29.99.
